There was an unfinished Chevy truck featured in Street Rodder magazine recently, can anyone I.D. the centerpull rack and pinion they used? It looks like it could be the answer to alot of headaches on my roadster. Thanks, Jason
What issue? One center pull R&P was used on Chevy Cavaliers. It mounted on the firewall so it was rear steer.
Yep, Cavaliers are center pull rear steer. Dodge Intrepids are the same basic rack but are a front steer. Tie rod ***emblies will interchange between the two! Gene
I found it. It was the July issue. I don't think that is a Cavalier R&P. See attached picture for the Cavalier setup. The Cavalier setup would be easier to use because the steering shaft hookup is offset to the driver's side.
Gene; Are you sure the Intrepid is front steer? If it is would work for my project real well. Can't find much abt them on the i-net, and havent seen one in a while.. Thanks in advance.. Keith
With out a doubt, an Intrepid is a front steer. I have one laying here. When I installed a rack on my 39 Plymouth I needed a rear steer rack. I flipped that Intrepid rack every direction I could think of hoping I could make it work. I ended up buying a Calivier rack from a junk yard. I even used a set of Intrepid tie rods on the GM rack. 93-97 Intrepid rack with tie rods attached pictured. Gene
Super!! Wish you were'nt so far away or I would come buy it from you.. Would like to find a junker to "mock-up" with @ the local yards so will do some asking around.. Thinking back when the Intrepid came out, they were advertized as one of Chryslers first "cab foward" cars. Maybe thats how the rack can be near the firewall and still in front of the front wheels.. I looked at some pics of the cars with the hood open with someone pointing at the rack and thats all I can figure out,, ha Also looking @ pics of the rack, it did look like the pinion shaft was on the back side (after reading your post) Got the bump-steer thing all figured out, now just need to find the parts. looks like I've got some ideas now, thanks agn Gene..
