No inspection needed, I've ***led many vehicles with clear out of state ***les. The transferable NewYok registration is good to tansfer to a ***le also.
Yep, I concur what Kirk just said including the transferable New York registration. NY is where my '47 Chevy convert came from.
I'll go you one better - I just ***led my 49 Crosley - no ***le - by just carrying in the VIN plate ! They did a check for stolen on the data base, but no visual check. Michigan used to be much stricter on sending out a State Patrolman to check VIN, safety equipment, etc. (went thru it several times over the years), but all that went away with police budget cuts.....
It depends on where in Michigan. In Bay City/County you are OK if you have a ***le but if not the DMV won't deal with you. They hand you an inspection paper and we have ONE sheriff that comes out and does all inpections. He won't waste his time if it's an out of state vehicle without a ***le.
Thay just started doing the first of the year. The Sec of State here in Bay City or surrounding areas will NOT run any vin numbers for you. The sheriff is of very little help as well. I recently had a problem when I sold my Packard to a guy in Arizona. I did not notice the DMV had transposed 2 numbers on the ***le(there was only 5 ... go figure) When the guy went to register it in AZ. it was caught. The DMV would not run the numbers and kept sending me to the sheriff. The State Police in AZ. sent inspection papers to me but the sheriff said he could not do anything without the car here. the DMV here would not send the history to AZ. It ended up taking 7 months and he had to have a bond ***le issued. I also have a 41 Ford from a N. Dakota junkyard with complete bill of sale. Sheriff will not inspect vin numbers on that as well.
The neat thing is you don't have to use the DMV in your county. If one is giving you trouble regarding something you could just hop in you car and head to a different DMV. I live in the Metro Detroit area and have used the ones both in both Gaylord and East Tawas when I've been up that way on a holiday and had to get something done.
Called the DMV (looooooong wait time) and was told to register a car with out of state ***le the following is needed: 1) Bill of sale 2) ***le 3) Proof of Mich no fault insurance. Is it that simple? Does anything have to be notorized - like they used to require.
5-6 years ago when I still lived in MI, I bought a Jeep out of Iowa. I had no notorizing or bills of sale; just the Iowa ***le signed over. I had proof in insurance with me and had no troubles. Noone had to look at it either. This was in Muskegon County.
Much has been posted on transfering the paperwork i.e.using a New York registration to obtain a Michigan ***le. That handles the paper part. What do those who use "historical do***ents" to get a Michigan ***le do to get vins on the actual vehicle? What is the deal on those "sticker" vins seen on some ***embled or otherwise "created" vehicles?
If the car has a ***le, out of state or in state doesn't matter, all you need is the signed ***le. Proof of insurance would only be needed if you were plating it at the same time. They no longer need to be notarized
Has anybody ever tried to ***le a car using vin#on the car and it came back not good what happens then?
I just ***led and plated the '36, with no paperwork whatsoever. I just walked in with my Hagerty proof of insurance, the body tag from the firewall, and said I'd lost the ***le to the car. I have HALF of the ***le to the car, issued in 58, but the half with the ***ignment to new owner, the lower half, was missing, and this seemed by far the easiest way. Worked for me.
One of my cars was stolen in Dallas TX and was found and impounded in Walker MI fifteen days later. The VIN and license plate number of stolen cars are placed in NCIC if the car is not found in ten days. I flew to Chicago and took a bus to Walker MI to retreive the car. The license plate on the car were stolen and did not match the VIN. The police made a routine check of the lates and VIN when they found the car with the car thief asleep at a roadside park. Whe I arrived at the Walker Michigan police pound the police had taken the stolen Texas plates off the car and said I would have to register the car in Michigan get new plates in order to drive it out of the state. The Walker police told me in order to register the car in Michigan, I must be a Michigan resident, in other words I had to get a Michigan driver's license. WTF? The cop saw that I was at my wits end so he let me have the stolen Texas plates and wrote a letter giving the situation and gave it to me in case I was stopped by the police or state trooper between Michigan and Texas. I could show the letter the the officers and if they had any questions, call the Walker Police Department and ask for him. I made it back to Dallas OK. Tghe car thief was the son of a prominent Walker resident and had never been in trouble before. I think the guy that was caught in my stolen car had bought the stolen car and he got caught in it. He was in the Walker jail when I arrived there to get the car. I never heard any more about it. The Michigan authorities dropped the charges against the guy since I recovered the car intact. The Dallas cops told me there was a car theft ring operating in the Dallas area and they are the ones who stole my car. They thought they knew the ring member who stole it and they were going to get him soon.
You had the vin number and they ran it, whether you know it or not, to see if it was on the stolen list before they issued you a new ***le. The original post asked about a car WITH a ***le
Thanks for all the input! One more question - what are approximate registration fees for a $1000 jalopy? They said they would register it to me as an out of state resident too.
Yes, I know the vin #'s were checked. My point is, there's more than one way to GET a car ***led, even if you have paperwork, there may be an easier way.
