Last weekend, while on the way home from the All Deuces Run ... a fellow Deuce owner ( a non HAMBER ) started having fuel issues. His 32 could not keep up with Hotrodprimer, myself and another 32. His fuel filter was full of trash/junk :(

We slowed down and tried working on it but to no avail. We finally found a parts store close to the Interstate and changed the filter. Most all old HAMB friendly rides have old tanks. Mine is a original 32 one. A lot of the Deuces on the run were the same. No real shame in having a little rust/trash in a 70 something year old tank ... but I have a extra fuel filter in my little emergency kit. :) I think everyone should. :D

I am not putting anyone down ... but posting this as a simple reminder ... if we had not been able to find a simple fuel filter ... it could have ruined a otherwise PERFECT day and trip.

Keep a spare fuel filter ... handy

POR-15 gas tank sealer is one of the best products I have ever found.
I do every car I have and my motorcycles and NEVER have trash in my fuel system.
Its not very nice to your friends to use a 70 year old tank without it

Run a big-*** fuel filter upline, close to the tank. The little ones don't do squat, other than plug up a LOT quicker!

I put this in every tank , old or new . Bought a new "Tanks" Tank for a project '32 a few years ago and it was full of shavings and other junk . **** ended up in the entire fuel system + the 6 Stromberg 97's . Cleaned and sealed the tank with this product + I always carry a spare filter or 2 in every old car ...........Z.

I've heard of Red Kote - but I thought it was just to repair an old tank. I have a new Tanks tank I'm getting ready to put in. My luck, I'd run Red Kote in it, not have the tank preped correctly, then have chunks of the product pumped out.

I don't know if this trick is common knowledge or not:
Turn the filter around backwards in the line from the tank and run the free end into a bottle.
Run the electric pump or the engine for a few seconds. This will often blow enough **** out of it to function again. This has saved me a couple of times.
I do this as ordinary maintenance on old cars, just to keep an eye on what comes out.

I use the washable clear ones. Most all auto parts stores sell them, started using them just incase this would happen.

I've been saved more than once X5 by having a spare fuel filter or two on board any old car I've had.

  9. That's certainly a good point, but tank sealer won't do anything for you if you get a little "trash" in the fuel. Easy enough to get some in your fuel if the station tanks are low or even if they just received a fresh "dump" of fuel.

Seems like a fuel filter and a spare would be cheap insurance!

Here's a little known fact. A plugged fuel filter won't ruin your day. You just gotta accept when you remove it there's a carb rebuild in your future.

Most carbs will accept a ton of **** and still work fine. Filter gets plugged? Discard it. Just run the beeatch til you get to a place with a filter.

You've pointed out a good reminder of plan A. Just wanted to point out plan B :)

  11. I thought you were gonna talk about spare tires.

I was pleased to find the 31 roadsters trunk will have room for a spare as well as toolboxes - one for tools and the other for a few parts etc.

The 32 roadsters rumbleseat doesn't have near the room - or convenience - but a 24" diameter spare on 6" wheel will fit.

Probably ought to start carrying one, but right now I'm thinking a bottle of slime and the 12 Volt compressor would do the trick.

It helps to run a bigger filter.

Hard to see here, it's behnd the fuel pump.

Mounted to an aluminum remote oil filter bracket.
It required cutting the 3/4-16 ****** down to 9/16-NF I think it was.
    Wix filter.

Nice part is, Wix makes a filter the same size and thread as a Fram PH-8 oil filter, but it's for gas.
No rethreading required with it and I'll probably use one of those on the 31.

The smaller filter shown above was used on little brothers drag race Henry J when it was running mid-9's . . . plenty of capacity for a slowpoke roadster running the streets....

Are there any ill effects on these tank sealers with the ethanol that is being forced on us? Ethanol does have an effect of cleaning the systems out and plugging filters.

I think we all know to NOT run the little gl*** filters, right?

Those things like to break and cause a m***ive, unstoppable gasoline fire under the hood. If you've got one, replace it with a plastic or steel filter immediately.
