this is a bit O/T but not really... i guess im wondering on what the etiquette is for this...... we here are all hotrodders and have abused our cars at least once right, well my friend has a riced out honda civic and abuses the hell out of this thing. he was racing some other idiot yesterday morning and ran over a speed bump at a high rate of speed. after that he had no power and a strange rattle. he asked me to check it out for him. turns out when he ran over the speed bump he wacked his catalytic converter, and it broke inside causing the cat to get clogged. i pulled the cat off and hollowed it out for him (illegal i know). so we went on a test drive. he got on his car HARD! slammed through three gears and pulled the e brake to whip it around at the end of the street. he asked me if i wanna drive his "race car". i get behind the wheel and drive , i didnt even get on it i was cruising and shifted into second. there was a loud crunch sound and the car started jerking real bad.the transmission blew up! he feels that sence i was driving the car its my fault! i told him to kick rocks and he ask me " how would you feel if i drove your 29 ford and blew the transmission" my 29 has a flathead with a 39 ford transmission, i drive it hard everytime i go out in it. im expecting it to break everytime i go out!
but if my friend blew it the same way i blew his trans i would not find anyone responsible. i mean i figure it just its time to break. am i right? has anyone ever broken your toys or vice versa??

i know this guy, not this exact guy but this type of guy, if someone popped my tranny when i was in the car ya it would suck but hell i'm in the car letting him do whatever it took to kill it, and the first response would be "that was awesome" just to take away from the situation so he would feel better, and fix it. Is this guy serious he knows it wasn't your fault. just looking for a wipping boy.

I've blown up a couple of friends motors in similar fashions. They knew they had troubled or weak parts. I offered to help rebuild, but they wouldn't ever insist that I pay for the damages.

In one case, I had a friend with a Miata (aka "Dude Canoe") that had a built motor and an aftermarket turbo system. We went out one night and he was having fuel issues with a quirky FMU. One the way home I'm driving, we're next to a friend of his in a supercharged dude canoe, and he wants me to show his friend that the turbo is superior. I stomp the throttle, FMU goes wacko, increases fuel pressure, way rich at injectors, puts them into overload which reduces efficiency at duty cycle, motor gets lean at full boost, and POP! a chunk of the piston ring land & part of the ring come apart.

The next day we tore down the motor, he knew it wasn't my fault, as he insisted that I drove it hard, and he knew the FMU was acting funny. Eventually he got the car back on the road, but nothing came out of my pocket. We remain friends to this day, and still laugh about that night. It comes with the territory.

2nd that. Something tells me you no matter how this turns out, you guys won't be friends in 20 years. Spend time with the ones who will be and don't sweat these types.

Your friend is a dick for wanting money.

He asked YOU if you wanted to drive his car. He was in it with you. It's HIS responsibility. Sounds like he needs to learn how to build a car the right way.

If you had taken it for a couple of months and were driving it to and from work everyday, that would be a different story. If you borrowed the car to make a home video to send into Jackass jumping it over curbs and holding it at redline til it blew, it would be a different story.

    That guy can suck it.

He doesn't sound like a friend. He thrashes and trashes on it constantly, but you get on it ONCE and it blows...he's just trying to get something for free from you. What a waste of carbon.

He asked you to drive, like a bunch of guys have have already said tell him to go pound sand. It's not your fault that the trans decided to die right after he put you behind the wheel.

Now tell him he can pay you for the work you did on his cat converter.

Saw the same type of thing a few years back on another forum. This guy was helping his friend yank an engine out of his car and the engine hit the radiator that he should have removed first, screwing it up.

The so-called friend wanted him to pay for half of the radiator. Imagine that crap, helping out your buddy for free and he wants to charge you for some of the damage that was caused by his own stupidity.

Time to find some new friends.

That is the way it goes today, kind of like when some a-hole pulls a bonehead move in traffic and then gives you the bird...

Or when my nephew broke his plastic recorder (like a flute) over my son's head and then went (literally) crying to his mom that "Jimmie broke my recorder". :D (My nephew is better now)

It is MBS, (Mammas Boy Syndrome) when something goes wrong it has to be someone elses fault...
I think he might need a "growin up lesson"...

I have a paving and heavy equipment company. We seize engines, break transmissions, and generally fuck things up all the time. I don't start deducting peoples wages when something breaks, I accept it as the nature of the beast. However, I have dealt out some scathing ass chewings for doing shit like not checking water, oil, and hydraulic levels before starting. That and breaking curbs. Concrete is fucking expensive.
