Trying to remove the starter on my 53 mainline, one bolt visible, and cant find another anywhere. Is there a trick to this?
Which engine do you have? Most (maybe all) of the Ford engines from that era just have two bolts. The other bolt will be 180 degrees from the other one... straight across to torque it evenly. You may have to attack some grease with a screw driver to find the other bolt. Good luck -Chris
They are cast into the block and have to be removed throught the tailpipe. Otherwise, you unscrew the small, long bolts that run completely through the starter ... they are on the front end.
"Otherwise, you unscrew the small, long bolts that run completely through the starter ... they are on the front end." Ol' Slapnuts is saying to himself, "I ain't falling for that ****."
When you take those loooooong bolts out make sure that the starter don't fall apart because they not only hold it in but they hold it together!! If you only take them out far enough to get them out of the starter plate you should be OK. JAX, I had a guy recently trying to pull the starter plate and all to get the starter off
Yup, on the flathead V8 it's the long bolts that go all the way through the starter. I know it sounds crazy but it's true.
Good, Slapnuts. And it's nice to read posts from other guys who find humor in the way some of this stuff is designed.
You found one bolt...if car has automatic, there is an extra bolt through a side bracket, and that may be what you referred to? Only different 221-239-255 starter: Extra bolt, different drive and gear.
