How did you build yours? Mine's a '68 large-journal motor, I used a Crane Energizer 3/4 race cam (based on the L79) with Flow Tech 4-into-1 headers and a Weiand Stealth manifold. I'm running camel hump 1.94, 64cc heads and 10.5:1 pistons. The whole works is attached to a Muncie 4-speed. It makes real good power and moves around my 2941 lb convertible real well. What have other people done?
I had a '65 Chevelle SS convert 327 300hp for 28 years. When I rebuilt it at 107K I put all Edlebrock Perfomer stuff with a new Carter AFB and headers. It had a Muncie and 3:55 gears. That car would run.The performer stuff gave me better off idle low end torque than the original cam and intake. The top end went up about 700rpm's also.
'67 block with stock bottom end. It has been bored to .030 over, with flat top pistons. Comp Cams XE284H cam, 186 camel humps with a little port work, roller rockers, 2 Eldelbrock 500 cfm carbs, and lakes exhaust. All of it through the Muncie and 3.55's. I'm diggin' it.
I ran nearly the same set up in my '64 SS. Double humpers and 3" Rams thru a M20 and 4:11 posi. It would hold its own for a "Grandma Car"
Ya just can't beat that L-79 cam for a streeter. Actually ya just can't beat a 327 for a streeter either. Good combo friend.
I´ve a ´69 large journal 327 in my 56 Bel Air. I had the block bored to .040 over and used a set of Speed Pro L2166NF Pistons with .125" dome. The heads are camel humps with 64cc chambers, milled to 62cc , with 2.02/1.60 valves. Cr is about 10.6 to 1. I´ve an Edelbrock Performer RPM cam and intake and an Edelbrock 600cfm carb. I´m running ****** Super Comp Headers and 2 1/2 " pipes. There´s also an unilite distributor and an accel coil. I´m very confident with the 327, it revs pretty nice, has good low end performance and sounds great I´m just about to build another one for a buddy of mine for his 32 PU. He´s going to run 6-2s, but everthing else is going to be the same. Here are some pics.
Hope I'm not opening a can of worms but I've got a 65 Corvette besides my 50 Ford. The vette's got a 350 horse 327 that's totally stock and pretty well worn out. I run premium unleaded in it. The ol' girl pulls like a freight train. All I've ever done to it is change the oil and the plugs when they oil foul. Chevy got it right with the 327.

I'm building a 64 small journal bored .040 over, domed pistons, double hump large valve heads, comp cams big mutha thumper cam, gear drive, offy three duece intake with holley 94's, and zoomie headers, hooked to a Saginaw 4 speed.
Im running a large Journal 68 327 in my 53 Chevy. Lower end and upper end all fresh. I dont have the cam specs. handy but i will fill that in later as an edit. originally i was running an Edelbrock Performer, and a Rochester Q-jet, a change of that is in the works with a Tri-power set up of 3 -2GC Rochesters on an Edlebrock C-357-B intake. The heads are mostly stock 2.02 valved heads. 64CC chambers. and dumping into Sanderson Block Hugger Headers made to fit the 53 with SBC installed.all Mated to a TH350 that has been worked over buy my friend at his trans shop. still chasing some small problems, not sure what is causing them yet..could be a vac*** leak..or a valve job issue. but it still runs strong, I know it could be better
64 block,10/10 steel crank ARP mainstuds, recond. stock rods w/ARP bolts, Forged flat tops, balanced, 461 heads ported w/ 2.02 intake valves, Comp cams Blower cam, Roller tip rockers, chromoly pushrods, topped off with a Dyers built 471 and single 750 AFB
That sounds like a high expectation for HP output. I don't know, maybe the high comression will get you there. I am not knocking, just curious how you came up with 600 or 580 HP figure on a small cube recipe like that. You do have a big cam (what are the @ 50 numbers?), but I don't see those numbers unless you have a huffer.
i run a 327, double hump heads(ported and had a valve job) old crane blueprint muscle car cam, 447 lift in and out(supposed to be a 350 horse cam), flat top pistons with a 65 corvette intake and a 675 holley on top... runs great, fast enough to have some fun and very streetable! here is a link to a vid of mine in my 51... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=369682
Ive ran a 69 327 smallblock for21 years. Believe it or not has less than 10,000 miles on it, But that 's a different story. 69 camaro 327 feulie heads.2102 cam and tripower 30 over. Currently on engine stand right now.
I have 800 miles on a small journal, .30 over, 327. 1.25 dome pistons, 75cc heads ported polished 3way grind 1.94 valves comp cames not sure on cam.. 280/270-480/470 lift and 3 rochesters (2g) mallery elec. ig. like the power i'm surprised by the torq!!!!! 4 speed in a model A now we're havin fun !!!!!
my cam is a solid comp cam 620" lift close to 12:1 shoud be close to pulling high numbers @ the crank 620 ...580 to the rear wheel according to the machine shop which has built many high hp 327...some even supercharged and have had proven dynos .. we will see .. and i will post pics of the prostreet truck
69 lg journal,good rods,Ross 550 dome,Lunati 550-530-295-285 cam,2-hump 461 heads worked over good,tunnel ram with 900cfm of carbs,mallory Y-L dist. Sure hope it'll peel out !! >>>>.
Great motors! Especially with a 4-speed. They were always reliable and hard-to-hurt with their great rod-stroke ratio, forged steel crank & rods, camel-hump heads, etc. Bore it out to a 331 CID, stick a Munice behind it and you got the making of a VERY fun drivetrain. A cl***ic combination.
Man 5 years between posts! Talk about Night of the Living Thread. Neat subject though. I have a '68 327 out of Pappy's old Impala I need to build up some day. Don't let me slow yall down, proceed as normal.
I've got a 300 horse 327 with camel hump heads, out of a 65 Caprice in my truck. It had 66,000 miles on it when I put it in. Before I put it in, I replaced the oil pump, timing chain, lifters, and put in a 350 horse 327 cam. It's fed by a 670 cfm Holley Avenger and a Performer intake.
Used to run a 1965 Chevy Nova with a 327 punched to 331. It was a small-journal motor with pink rods, bushed and beamed with flat-top Venolia floaters, perfect circle rings, crank scaper in moroso pan, crane cam with 516 lift/310 duration ona 110 lobe center, 202 camel humps, cc'd ported with angle plugs fitted, angle milled with a torker and an 850 Thermo-quad I believe was done by a young Brad Urban. Real buzz motor. Ran 11:95 at old Irwindale...once.....damn! Of course that was over 30 years ago when we ran heads up with dinosaurs.
Mine is a large jounal, 40 thou over, balanced, new cam (biggest Crane hydraulic according to the engine guy) 2 hump fuelies small valve, so the mixture velocity stays high, but I do have a pair of genuine Traco angle plugs, so I can see how they go. The whole lot is topped with 4 X 48 IDA Webers, and headers of course. Oh yeah, Muncie M21, backed by a Pontiac 3.9 with a Wiesman LSD.
I love 327's. I have one that's been in 5 cars. I'll keep it forever. It's the best Chevy motor for a lightweight car that GM ever built. Mine's a 1970 casting 3959512 warranty/service motor (CE stamp) with 3927186 Z28/LT1 2.02 heads that came in the '62 Corvette I bought in 1977. These motors were never sold over the counter, they were only for service work done on HiPo cars at the dealership.
Bought mine from the local Chevrolet dealer on sale; $425 in '76 if I recall correctly. Still powering my '41 pickup. Not sure whether it is small or large journal, what size valve, what cam. Never had it apart. I will tell you that it got me to school today, yesterday, and quite a few of the previous days for some time. Not fancy, but plenty good.
