I came across a '76 LTD and I would like disc brakes on the front of my '56 Fairlane, so here come the questions: Would the conversion be a straight bolt on? What parts would I need to grab off the LTD? Should I buy the used spindles and just buy new calipers and rotors? Would I need any parts not found on the LTD to make the conversion?
evening bump after seeing what napa wants for rotors, I think I may try to have the stockers turned if I go this route.
this may be an option with granada spindles....search "granada spindles"...maybe some others will chime in....
Everything I've read says Granada spindles will work fine with little to no modification. Problem is, the granada supply has run dry in my area. MAybe LTD brakes are the next best thing?
i've seen the ltd thing done on 59 to 64. spindles out. spindles rotors calipers and outter tierod end
check with scarebird, a member here....does a lot of custom disc brake brackets, he may have what you need...
I've researched this granada, ltd conversion stuff pretty heavy for the last month of so for a 57 fairlane (not sure if same applies to 56). The ltd stuff will work but what bothered me was it seemed like there might be a problem with tire rub on the upper ball joint if your tire or wheel size wasn't just right. With the granada spindle you get a little drop built in which raises the tire high enough to clear. Not sure if this makes much sense. Also the granada calipers and roters are pretty inexpensive. I was lucky and found a parts car merc monarch hideing about 100 yds from my driveway that had all the front end still under it for $50. Long story short to me the granada would be a better way to go if you can find one.
get ahold of flattop bob . . . he might have a set of granada spindles. the granada/versailles/monarch conversion is the easiest. ream out the the spindle for 7* taper and uses your stock tie rods/ends. less fuckin around if you ask me and you get the aforementioned 2" drop in the front
