I have a 50 chev convertible that has been on the back burner since '88 or so... I have finally decided that if I don't at least put it together and get it running I may never get a chance to drive it. So I am getting started.. I have a 57 gmc straight 6 that will go in it. The rear has been changed, so it has an open driveline now, I think the rear in it now is a 56 chev. What kind of ****** can/should I run-one that I can hook up to the jimmy, and still fit within the X for the convertible frame? Is the 567 rear pretty much a direct bolt in on a 49-54 chev? it looks like it fits, but I stuck it i there 20 years ago just to roll it around..
soooo.. anyone buildng a 49-54 convertible without the stock running gear? Any hints tips? I can't be the only one!
Jeez Jon, I hope that was a joke.... I've seen that car. Its a cool old custom...You should just bring it back to its 50's /60's show condition IMHO
haha I'm just trying to get some kind of f*cking response!! You would think that with all the hambers on here with 49-54 chevs that someone had built one with an open driveline!!! and maybe one of them did it with a convertible,,,,,, yes it is going back to its 50's-60's configuration, for now its keeping the original paint job too, the only things that were missing from the original car were the skirts, and hood. I'll try to find some pics of it, maybe that will stir up some interest,,,,,
well if you are running a GMC six I would figure get a GM 3 speed. maybe a later one with full synchros. not sure about what modifications that X member would need for a bigger trans. I've seen those frames but didn't pay too much attention to how things went together. one thing for sure... a later automatic will be way bigger than the 3 speed regardless there is nothing that can't be re-enginneered with the help of a sawzalll and a welder.

Ok here's the pics, they were in an album dated 1985, so I guess it was 24 years ago! we cleaned it up, and then pretty much just stuck it in a storage shed for 2 decades... check out the bantha tracks shirt in the 4th pic! the last couple pics was me experimenting with some 54 chev, and olds grille pieces...
If you look close there are some on the front too!lol Not sure if I am keeping those.... I probably will go the way I found it with the grille for now,I might throw some 54 teeth in there, I really like the look of this one:
I read that you have a '50 Chevy conv. that you are starting to restore. I have a '50 Chevy hardtop that I am converting to a conv. I have everything to make the swap, but I need some pictures of how the folding frame attaches to the body, and how it folds into the space behind the rear seat. Any pictures would be appreciated. I plan to use a small block chevy engine, and a 700 R4 trans. Haven't decided on the rear end. Thanks, Steve. contact me at vetmansteve@aol.com.
The rearend you have will be a good choice. I put a later model rearend in a 50 or 51 Chevy sedan, I flipped the rear springs around, front to back. The rearend lined up great. I also used an S10 5spd ****** behind the 57 straight 6. Dean
hey friend just starting a 50 chevy convert any advice would be great. also i need a few parts if you no whare to look thanks
I remember when you put some of the photos a few years earlier, I remember I thought the headlight and taillight treatment was neat. I have a 50 Hardtop. I want to do the 55 chevy headlight treatment on mine.
I've got the same feeling about mine. Too many projects right now, but hopefully its next. I'd look at a camaro/fireturd 5 spd. Good luck, keep us posted!
