I jumped into the 'cl***ic car' circuit this June with my '54 Mainline, and I've been ******* around with it all summer thinking the ignition was whacked somehow. I've installed nearly anything that doesn't cost an arm and a leg on this car, trying to figure out why it had a miss and wouldn't idle, and ran like *** with the choke on. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, intake/exhaust manifold gasket... Well middle of September I got an eyeball on a NOS carb for my car on ebay and snagged it. So it showed up and I finally got off my *** and tore it down to make sure all the rubber inside was good, and all the parts were there... She checked out fine, and I installed it tonight.... cranking cranking, filling up the fuel bowl, and vroom... ****ing car now runs smoother than my '94 F150. I was so relieved to hear this car run so smoothly and quietly (it was running like *** and was about 3x noisier before) SO I am at a loss what's wrong with the carb I got the car with, but I'm not going to piss around with the automotive gods. I can't wait for Friday (day off) to hopefully take my ride for it's first ride longer than around the block. Just thought I'd share.. In case I confused any of you with tech questions and help requests, it turns out that I was right about the ignition and vacuum leaks being in check.. Just that the carburator I had for some reason is fukkered up. Oh well! motor on I guess. Zen moment:
Nice carb! Love that gl*** bowl. But I remember that liquid in the gl*** bowl as being reddish colored. Yeah, I'm old. Still can't get used to piss colored gasoline with no lead.
Well, looking at the old carb I took off there, it's reddish in color, thanks to my rusty fuel tank....
Hey man, good to see you sorted it out. Didn't know you were having a problem or I could have tried to help you out. By the way, have you seen a homebuilt roadster from Minnesota driving around town? I was at Lowe's yesterday and saw it in the parking lot with another younger guy messing with the shifter. Went over and it turns out he just finished it up about 3 months ago and it was stuck in 4th gear and the curb in front of him wasn't helping. He was having a difficult time pushing in the clutch and pushing the car backwards at the same time so I gave him a push back and he got it out of there. I told him about the HAMB so hopefully he checks the place out and posts.
I haven't seen the roadster. Last week when I was at O'Reillys, a 58 Ford wagon pulled up next to me, and he had Hawaii plates! I didn't get to talk to the owner though. I was busy dumping 60 bucks on a 6 volt battery. I've had my eyes on this 52 chevy that's running around Ames though. I think the guy lives behind me. It's black and I believe by the sound of it, it's got an LT1 engine in it. He had the chevy at that main st car show in Ames a few weeks back, and I really dig the interior, even though it's all 'new' stuff. The thing basically looks like a new car.
