Does anyone know what parts on a rebuild are interchangeable? Have heard that there are other parts such as Pistons that can be used instead of the expensive Hemi stuff.. I am rebuilding my hemi now and the parts are way expensive. Any good links would be appreciated..
There is TONS of info here to answer those very questions. Click on the "HEMI Tech" banner/picture in my signature line, grab a comfy chair, and start reading! Cheers!
The basic rebuild parts are all available, not cheap but available. Swapping some other brand of piston for example, is an exercise in futility. You would need to match pin dia ( or modify the rod), match the compression distance ( or change to a different rod) and finally pay to cut valve reliefs (only if the ring is down far enough). The only cheap piston that swaps and works would be a stock 354, but there is a 0.125" bore difference. If you ask around you will find some take-outs....but then other issues pop-up. If you are planning to do a proper, 100% rebuild, then you should budget about $3500 for all of the parts and about $1500 for the machine work. Yes, you can buy several high HP crate engines for the same money. Yes, you can rebuild 3 or 4 small blocks for the same Money. And if you get blinded by all of the aluminum eye candy then add another $2000....... Ask lots of questions before spending lots of money. .
