Looking for a starter, engine fan and generator for my V8 60. Are they unique to a V8 60 or will any of the 85hp units work? Thanks for the help.
Sorta...Generators will interchange, but 60 ones used smaller pulleys I think since crank pulley was smaller and bracket was a different height than big car. Starter used different drive...think actual motor same, think drive is same as readily available N series one. Will lookitallup and correct as needed. There will be several different actual 60 generators...look for casting numbers on pulley and bracket with 2 or 4, like 74 and 82.
Bruce Just the guy I was hoping would see this post - I'll see if I can dig up those casting numbers.
So far...starter uses armature and drive/gear from N, should be gettable via the tractor nuts. Get the handcrank out of the tool pouch...136 cubes ain't hard to swing!
V8-60 starter has a longer, aprox 1/2", shaft and smaller drive gear. I understand certain Ford N tractor is a direct swap BUT have no first-hand knowledge. I wouldn't count on an 85 to 60 conversion. There should be V8-60's (or N's) around.
I'll check the chart and find out whether rest of starter is V8, N, or odd. So far I think you can fit about any gen, but it is going to be slow and likely will need different fanbelt.
I buddy of mine just rebuilt a stock V8-60 and he didn't have a starter. But he lucked out when he visited Ray Helger in RI and luckily pulled one from the bottom of a starter/generator junk pile for rebuilding. You might want to give Ray a call to see if there is another one lurking in that pile! His website with phone number is: http://www.raysantiquesandparts.com/
This -38 60hp have a generator from a France Ford Vedette same with oil pan and gear box not sure if starter its that to. Anders
Into the hideous mess of the parts chart...armature and drive/gear also used on N...front plate is regular V8...fields are also, so safe bet that only armature and drive need to be 60/tractor. Tractor people probably reproduce it.
Just looked at your profile..."My first Hotrod magazine Woooow first day in rest of my life." Me too...I was about 12 when I latched onto a stray HRM in South America...then I found R&C, the last small issue and the first big one...discovered the '32 Ford...life permanently derailed! That 60...French?? Does it have "SAF" emblem cast on back?
This its built out from a USA -38 but lot of parts can taks from france. Yes I think its right Ford Tractor use lot of parts simular cars If I remember right. When I was young we have a Ford Major 194? something and engine looks like a four banger from A ford ? the only memory I have of this )) When we buy it its did have steel oil pan but some owner before us have put France generator on it. This 60hp we put in my son's little rod a Ford Y (cant have bigger V8) and use France gear box for open drive shaft and easy to use Hurst shifter. I read all I find just for 60hp and Bruce do you know more about Brazil Simca ?? Some did write they try put OHV heads from Brazil to USA 60 hp ??? That I want see because Brazil heads looks realy good. Made 68-70? must try to find some ))) Anders
Someone on Fordbarn found 2 Brazil engines a few years ago, and sold one...some small, poor pictures were posted. Would be hard to find now. What's your China connection?? I'm from Nanking/Nanjing, and my '48 Ford was originally delivered via Shanghai Ford.
I just ordered a starter for a 8N. Go to google or another search and type in Ford 8N Tractor Parts. There were more than a few that had them. Paid $129 for it I think, you can order with or without the drive.
I asked Richard Willim, the V8-60 guru, the same question a while back. Here is his response: The generator is the same unit but the pulley is different. Especially between the early and late engines. The 60 starter is a unit of it's own. It has a different drive than the big flathead. The tractor starter has only one issue which is the location of the stud for the battery cable. It's located 90º from the car starter so it will hit the block unless you re-index the starter and put it on the bottom. Starters come up on E-bay once in a while. As for a source you will have to network around the shops like Little Dearborn, Etc. There is a company in the upper Michigan that make a nice small permanent magnet gear drive starter. $180 but by the time you find an original rebuild and convert it to 12 volts you will have $140 into it. I bought a used 8N starter right off a salvage tractor and it seems to fit fine, have not started it yet though. And the lug for the cable looks like it will not cause any interference with anything else. Maybe got lucky?
I know this is a VERY OLD POST but I figure Id shine some more light on the V860 starter for anyone coming across this post currently. I continued dad's (Rich Willim) work on the 60 and have proven the Ford N series Tractor Starter is the same as a 60hp with a couple differences (if the Tractor starter is original not a new one). Tractors had a STEEL rear plate and thinner front plate. Bendix is the same (same part #) 8N tractors had the Solenoid mounted on the starter. So if you get 1 with 2 little holes by the batter cable post, that is what its for. Mounting the Solenoid. Lets not forget the rarely seen V860 Starter Support Bracket
