New guy from NWATL area. Learning more about messing with cars. Don't have a traditional hotrod, but really enjoy them. Working on a project for me and my youngest (13 year old) son. Picked up a '65 Rambler American sedan (I know, too new - and 4 doors to boot). My sons and I have spent time learning about brakes (had fun replacing master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, drums, hoses, ...), learning about exhaust (and messing with swapping out an exhaust manifold), rebuilding the carb (so it's a goofy little one-barrel), popped off the head and got it rebuilt. We finally got the car running, turning and stopping. We're enjoying the bench seat and three-on-the-tree. Now we're starting to mess with a '66 Apache camper. I'm hoping to learn a lot more about working on older cars. Have had a lot of fun messing around and learning to date.
Greetings from Rockmart! Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup and Ozelle the '55 Ford send greetings to your little Rambler! It's neat that you're doing this with your son, working on an old car together is one of the best father-son relationship building things you can do. Sometimes, after I've dealt with people all day, I come home and raise the hood on one of my old Fords just to see something I understand and can fix if it's broke.
Welcome! If you see a dorking looking guy driving a pedicab around the square in Marrietta... push him off of it, then point and laugh at him... Then tell him his brother said "hi!"
Welcome from Marietta. You should take your son to the Hot Rod Reunion this week end in Bowling Green, Ky. Great rods and racing.
howdie from Powder Springs ( by night )and Marietta ( day job )....just remember don't say the word "rat" , some of the guys are easily upset.
Hello from buford,ga. they have a couple of car shows and swap meets at J R Miller park. lots of parts of all kinds and cars. then there is one the first saturday of the month at lanier speedway across from road atlanta. see ya around.
Welcome from Florida, it's not the project as much as the time spent together with you son that will count down the road. Have fun. Lee
Welcome from Covington.Enjoy the time spent with your son, that is some great bonding.Take care.Good luck. Stony
welcome from Moultrie GA, used to live in Cobb country, and also Dallas,my dad is in dallas, nothing wrong with your project, and you are teaching your son to work on it too, good deal.
Welcome on the board, those AMC's are gettin hard to find! I owned a 1969 AMX back in the day. I used to love making the Ford and Chevys wonder what happened ??? Enjoy the HAMB and it's ride.
Thanks everyone. We're having a lot of fun with the car (todays project was Ron Francis brake light switch so the brake lights actually go on when we hit 'em, the NAPA switch only worked when we stood on the brakes). Having fun and enjoying ourselves. I'll be looking around for HAMBers. Anyone local go to the second Saturday cruise-in at Wendies at the intersection of Dallas Highway and Barrett Parkway? I'll try to hit the Dallas Block Party next - that sounds like a good show. Never been, but it looks to just be a few miles up the road.
WE have a cruise in at Rockmart on second Saturday. Slate Market Grill, in the Sycamore Grove shopping center behind Triangle Foods at intersection of US 278 and GA 101. Also another big cruise in downtown Cartersville on first Saturday, straight shot up I-75 or US 41. Just learned today that the Rod Barons club is putting on a car show on Saturday 8/22 at Coot's Lake near Rockmart, across from my house, show site is only 14 miles from the downtown Dallas cruise in site, show runs from Saturday morning til time to head to Dallas for the cruise in. I'll be looking for the Rambler! Wife learned to drive on a '63 Rambler and loved that car. If I ever find a good one when I've got the cash on hand, I'll buy her another '63 Rambler.
The '63 Classic Cross Country wagon (in white with a blue interior, vacuum wipers, AM radio and a straight six) is one of my favorite cars. My dad had left the Army, done some various jobs for several years and had just signed up to be a minister in the Salvation Army. That car made a lot of trips from southern Maine all the way up to Houlton Maine on I95 just before you get into Canada. I liked that car a lot. It lost an arguement with a tractor trailer truck. Nobody got hurt - but I like the '63 Ramblers. Anyway - I've been sticking to rides of three to five miles or so. Brakes are good. Car doesn't overheat. Tommy Goza at Goza machine shop rebuilt the head after I blew the head gasket (either bad gas, stale gas - or I didn't torque it right). Front-end is aligned. Tires are new. I dropped the gas tank and got it cleaned out. Replaced hoses and did the basic tune-up stuff. We should be able to make Cartersville once I get the clutch rebuilt. I think I'm going to chicken out on that one. The clutch slips and the car leaks oil from the valve cover (already replaced the gasket) and I didn't do such a good job of adjusting the valves so you can hear us. But it does just fine for short trips as long as I avoid stopping on steep hills. We've made it to Rambo Nursery on 278, so we should be able to make it to Coot's Lake! (Yeah, it's not a show car. But it's fun to drive)
I don't know if the Coot's lake show is still on. The oddrods where asked if they want to take it over. As of right now we don't want the head ache of putting on a show.
