Anyone have a resource for photos of various numbers and number styles of the early salt flat or circle track rods. Whether they were permanent and styled, or quick with shoe polish, would like to look at some.

  5. In the early days, SCTA ***igned numbers to be used for the whole season. Some numbers were based on the previous years final points standings. I believe that only went from 1 to 10.

So what's the C,B, or A stand for?

Cl***ification by engine size...early years it ran backwards and "D" was huge engine, later "A" meant big. The notion of "Big" changed a bit over the years too.

SCTA still ***igns numbers. 1 through 25 I believe are reserved for the top 25 in points last year, but few will change their number unless the new number is #1. And some will not do that.

  11. Most I have seen appear to be painted on once at the lakes so they are not a super nice job unless the car is a race only car.
    Doc.

  12. Hi all!

So what would my 27 roadster with a 242 cu in inline 6 get cl***ified as?

Could be fun to put some numbers on the otherwise all black ****heaps sides.

Up until 1959, cl***es started from small displacements.
Whether it be roadster, modified or streamliner.
A-cl*** included engines up to 180ci.
    B-cl*** 181ci-260ci.
    C-cl*** 261ci-350ci.
    D-cl*** was open over 351ci.
Superchargers moved the car up to the next cl***.
