As far as the front suspension, It may actually be better but like PBRmeASAP said the Ford style suspension is cheaper to do and will allow you to get the car lower easier. If you look closely at the old pictures (40's-50's) of the dry lakes and salt racing, a large number of the cars had front suspensions that incorporated parallel leaf springs.
    Great pictures

I had realized that there were numerous car built in the 40's that incorperated Chevy frames or suspensions. Now up until the early 50's the most drop on an axle was around 2" right? So how could have one got his or her car down low with out extreme channeling? Flip the axle on top of the srpings and maybe flatten that front Cross Member will do the trick as Kerry on the Hamb did.

I am just really torn on which way to go with this '31 Chevy. Would a front setup from Speedway be taking the easy way out? What about getting just a 6" dropped axle form them and mounting the '54 Chevy spindles and brakes up to that? That seems easier but a lot less clean looking. I guess it's a matter of whether or not you like the parallel leaf setup out front. To me it looks like 10lbs of shit in a 8lbs bag (no offense). I really only appreciate it in Miller type cars and some 40's style roadsters. But for a mid 50's coupe it's pretty clear that a great deal of people would have swapped the front out for a ford instead.

It's 300 for a dropped axle or $450-$499 for the complete front end. Grrrrr.

  5. Oh Jeffery I agree with you. I love Non-Ford cars but there is no denying it those single spring front ends are cleaner and set lower.
In reality the early day lakes cars were really not low to the ground but like you say if one was ,it was the body not the suspension that was low.

Another reason for this post was to see what "Really Looks Best"

  6. I'm running transverse at both ends on mine. Had mine had parrallel leaves (sp?) when I started, I probably would have made it a three springer and left the front alone. But alas, the frame, she was bare...

Just depends on how much time you want to spend on it....my truck sat nice and low at one time....and i could have easily taken it down another 2-2 1/2".... dropped axles, axles on top of the leafs, removing leaves, flipping leaves....
It's not the lowest frame around, but it was sitting at 13 1/2" off the ground.....

C'mon your not an ass. But you are right that it was the quickest way. you know kinda one stop shopping for a front suspension. but as for bolt on naw:confused: I had to weld a new 32 ford crossmember, in along with the hairpin brackets, and a new steering box. I still got a headache from all the measuring to get it all straight. I guess it really doesn't matter they all look good:)...ghost

After watching "The Devil At Your Feet" last night and hearing the Pete had a '31 Chevy I decided to ask him what he was running. He said 6" Dropped Mas tube axle on the Original parallel springs with Pete And Jakes Shackles. He said the shackles alone got the car down an inch or two. I think that may be the way to go.

Now that I heard MAS went out of business I wonder if I can order a Tube axle set up for Chevys from speed way and weld some leaf mounts on that. It sounds like the best way to get this thing a bit lower. I don't even want the car to sit that low just have a good stance.

  15. Jeffery, once the axle is on top the spring instead of under it, you can basically go any were you want with the hieght. Of course the spring being on top the axle brings another problem in to play. That is the "Scrub Line". But then again if a car is super low the whole chassis might become a "Scrub line" issue.

Paul, you said "your best friend and you were going to build one" I didn't know we were going to do that! :D

Is this for the Chevy frame setting up on the frame table in your shop?

  17. Fortuantely, I do have a lot of "Best friends" so I be expecting you over at least a couple times a week.:D Yes it is that frame. By the way how's the welder working out?
Sure hope there some more pictures out there. I am really enjoying them and hope everybody else is too.

It would be a privileige to help out although I think I'de be better at bringing the donuts and coffee. The welder is doing great but I ain't sure about the operator yet (me). I haven't blown any holes with it yet and have about 10 hours on it i guess so far so good. That HTP 200 is a good Machine It's one of the better things in my little shop. The truck is going back up on my lttle welding table to be glued back together. I figure I should have it up and mounted to the table and ready for the glue gun by the end of this weekend as Mama is going to Amarillo for the weekend to see her daddy so there won't be any yelling about when I am coming in.

Here is a little photo montage' from the Johnson brothers at the antique drags it has a few pics (200+) at this site

The first 40 pics are of a camping trip to Horse Ass Canyon so you have to view those before the Drag pics come on so be patient.
