The last and only car of mine that was named, was in 1958. It was a 1950 Ford rag top, with a 3 carb,Fenton head flathead,3 speed o/d . I had the name "El Gato" painted on the lower front fender just behind the wheel well . It got me a lot of action during my senior year of high school in '59. ..............Jack
All of my cars have had names, but the only one that had it painted on was my '55 Customline, the "Freaky Tiki". It was painted small on the trunk lid. My current ride, a '62 Chevy C10 pickup, is named "Knuckles O'Toole". It seems to fit, but it won't get painted on the body anywhere. A serious gasser styled car, street legal or not, would look bad ass with the name (done right) on the rear quarter. Other than that, I think it looks goofy. But that's just me.
my flat bottom was titled "PHUQINITUP" cuz thats what I was always doin to it. When purchased it was titled "CUNTAGIOUS" my wife at the time made that go away.
'68 Barracuda named "Bruce". Which was also the nickname of the mechanical shark from the movie "Jaws".
Only one of my many cars did I name,a '41 Willys coupe pro street. I called it "Jumpin Jack Flash" Named after a drag car I use to love to watch at our local drag strip. I believe the original JJF car is pictured in one of the photo threads of drag cars. My Willys had the name next to the plate which was a personalized one that said "its a gas". Norm
Im doing a small name on the corner of the deck lid on my 56 chevy..."Midnite Raider".car was built in the 70s by a kid in my class Jackson RAIDERS and I named all my cars before Midnite Cruiser from the 1st steely dan LP, the only other was a HD I built called midnite revenge......kinda stuck in a rut the last 35 years.......the funnoest one was in the 70s a van in Portland Oregon that cruised Broadway was called"starship Intercourse" had the enterprise painted on it only the narcles were dicks.ya had to lok twice to catch it
heres a few HIGH WAY STARR and MOTHER POP CORN these cars were on the sreet when i was a kid back in the late sixties I remember them clearly The H.S. was a GTX and M.P was a bad ass falcon
Back in my street racing days, I saw a '66 Chevelle with "Satans Soul Shaker" in big letters on the rear quarter panels. A '66 Fairlane with "Midnight Special" on the trunk. The lowriders had song titles in the quarter windows like "Angel Baby" and "Love Train".
We call my '53 "Effie" Cuz that's what she is. Had "Shake, Rattle, and Roll..." lettered tastefully on every street machine and drag car I've owned. May do it on Effie too when she gets pinstriped.
'41 Plymouth 2-dr painted VW Saturn yellow. Had "The Goose" lettered on the trunk lid. Didn't have to answer the "is that goose shit yellow?" question anymore!
If you're depending on others opinions as to what to do with your own ride, I'd suggest one thing for you. I'm dead serious. Ask yourself ...Who's car is this? You're not asking what is period correct...you're not asking what would be proper to replicate an era. You need to stand in the fire, ask yourself what you like. In the early 1970's, I worked for Excalibur Motor Cars in Milwaukee. I drove a 1970 Pontiac Catalina 2 Door hardtop. I liked early Customs. I had the guys in the shop lower the car, dechrome it, ran Goodyear Wide Whitewalls and '57 Cadillac Hubcaps. Plans included a name on the rear quarters...."Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo" Why? It was my car and I wanted to run the car that way. In 1970, I ran a 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix with "Asphalt Angel" painted in Old English Script on the rear quarters....Why? Because it was my car, and I wanted it that way. You would do well to ask yourself what it is you like and stick to your guns....Benchmark cars never will be a result of what other people like or want. It's your car...it's just a car....Do with it what you want. The rest of us really don't matter. Best to you young man....Have fun! centurion9
I'm not big on car names but years ago there was a 69 or 70 Cougar drag car that raced at my local track. "The Preachers Daughter" The name stuck cuz I was dating a preachers daughter at the time.
every car I have ever owned has been given a ladies name- my reasoning is that, just like every woman, they have their own quirks, have their own ways of being treated, and can be just as stubborn and as quick to wrath.
I say name it. I had a bunch of muscle car friends in high school. Very closed minded to old styled stuff. Just make sure its a cool name, or you are gonna get alot of shit
Great topic..I grew up in northern Oregon in the 50's-60's when almmost every car parked at the high school had a name. It was expected. Here's a short list of ones I remember: light brown with red primer spots lowered 37 chevy coupe..had "Maverick" lettered on it in old-time western lettering..on the quarter panels. dropped maroon 37 Buick 4 door sedan [parents hand-me-down] with "Elliot Ness" lettered on the lower front fenders behind the wheel. Dark blue dropped 38 Buick 4 door [another parent's cast-off] with "Untouchable" lettered on the lower front fenders behind the wheel. Had a cariciture of a little guy in a gray trench coat with a hat and a tommy guy sticking down outta his coat...had a wisp if smoke coming off the end of the barrel...both buick guys would cruise together alot. Bright blue 47 plymouth 4 door dropped on the ground...white tuck & roll with suh-weeeet twice pipes...had "Blue Angel" professionally lettered in flowing script in white on the lower front fenders...very cool. freshly painted dark blue dropped 51 Merc 2 door with "Naked crotch" lettered in white behind the front wheels, down low...lasted one day until the fuzz made him get rid of it. He cruised around with a black primer spot behind each front wheel after that...still very cool. Primer spots were almost mandatory. Almost new red 58 chevy bel-air hardtop dumped in front with wide whites and chrome wheels [first car in town to have chromies] with "Sleepwalk" lettered on the lower right side of the decklid...tasty. My cousin had his girl's first name [Sue] lettered on the lower front fenders of his raked-out white with dark blue top 51 Pontiac 4 door sedan...'til they broke up. My 57 Pontiac 2 door was always "Poncho" [original, eh?] to me and my girl, who I later married....she loved that car as much as I did but we never got it lettered....she always refered to the car as Poncho, never "the car".
Had a 63 F100 unibody on a mid 70's F250 4x4 chassis I named "Beavis", and my '27 RPU is appropriately named "Buzzard Bait". Whatever floats your boat!
A kid in high school drove an old caddy hearse every day. Lettered on the rear door: "The Last Ride". I did lettering for my friends back then. Another buddy had an early 40's military jeep painted maroon, had a 283 mated to the stock running gear. Jeep Renegades were popular then (mid 70's). Got the idea to letter "Redgrenade" on the hood sides just like the modern jeeps.
I remember a chopped early to mid 50's Chrysler rolling around the Riverside area a while back named "AntiChrysler",a play on AntiChrist. The car was a bad ass custom.I think it was light Blue or mint Green.Only saw it once, and it was at night.
I call my beater truck Purple Haze, because that's what it leaves behind when I pull away. No need for label, she just does it on her own...
