I am trying to find the serial number stamped onto the frame of this 47 Ford COE that my brother and I picked up over the weekend. We figured it was stamped on the same location as my 47 half ton and our dads 47 two ton fire truck, but apparently they were stamped somewhere else on the COE. We blasted that part of the framerail and didn't see anything. Any help would be appreciated . Travis

A question...what letter is used on the COE serial to identify ch***is type?

Serial should begin with 799, 7 for 1947 and 99 to indicate 239 engine, then there should be a letter. I want to know if that is T for Truck or W for the COE specifically, and if there is anything else in the 799 block of stuff before the space and actual serial.
    Thanks...out hunting for data!

Thanks for the info . We will pull the grill out and look there. Bruce if we find something out as far as the T or W we will let you know, this is the same truck that my brother was asking info about on Fordbarn.

Pulled the grill out and blasted the cross brace like socalmerc suggested and found the number. Bruce it has a T after the 799. Thanks for the help. Travis

21T would be prefix for a '42 truck with 85HP engine...but serial would be up in the millins. If your 4 nubers are around 5020, you just found the part number for the crossmember!

The pre-war COE's had a VIN on the frame crossmember under the radiator. The post war units, with the full length radiator, stamped the VIN on the body panel ("chin panel" under the grille. My 41 is on the crossmember, my 47 was on the body panel. It's possible that any early COE with a full lenght radiator had it on the body panel and vice versa. The short radiator sat about 6" above the front crossmember and the long radiator sat in a saddle bolted to the crossmember, thus blocking the VIN space.

On my 47 COE the serial number is on the crossmember under the radiator on the right side as your looking at it near the frame rail on the lip of the crossmember. Rusty1, Yea the truck and car in my avatar are mine and my brothers. There both still flathead powered with t5 transmissions, mustang II fronts on air and four links in the back on air.

Sweet, I found it tonight after reading your guy's replies. I had to wire brush a thin layer of dirt/rust off to see it. So with mine being a 799T Vin, I guess its a 1947, and not a 1942. What was the prefix vin on the earlier Coe's (1938-1940)?

'38's would all have been 18's, the 221 series...pretty sure Ford wasn't crazy enough to use a 60!
Fron '39 up 239 was available with 99 series numbers. Not familiar with positions of surrounding letters on that stuff for trucks. Some earlier ones were BB18...I think 239's would have had T after the 99. Don't know for sure if used thus, but '39-42 would have been 99, 09, 19, 29 T presumably, and with heavy trucks there would for sure have been wartime builds as well.
