I went with a friend to look at a 390 FE for sale. The seller ,a self proclaimed FE expert, had a few engines and claimed that in the early 1960's, Ford offered a 302 FE engine in trucks.Anyone heard of this small big block or is it ********?

    Maybe he meant 352?

  3. The FE lineup consisted of the 332, 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, & 428.
    "FE" Means "Ford-Edsel"
The 302 is a windsor, aka small block.

I think there was a 302 Y block in trucks or maybe it was the right combination of parts would make a 302. But never heard of a FE.

He is absolutely right about a big block platform 302, just not an FE. It is the same platform of the Lincoln/truck motor, the large Y.

  9. I'd half to say He's not really an FE expert. I call B.S.

Ford had a 302 Y block (292-312 type) used in medium trucks around 1960.I found it listed in several vintage Motors manuals.

    302 LYB... Probably...

Ford trucks used Lincoln Y Blocks through 62....

These are not FE's FT's or Ford Y Blocks...

I have a Ford interchange book at home, I am 99% that there was no 302 FE's FT's or Ford Yblocks,,, ever..

  19. I believe "FE" actually means "Ford Engine" and was used to distinguish it
from the Edsel or "MEL/Lincoln" design. My brother in law is an FE guru and I always kid him that FE means "Farm Equipment" or "Finally Extinct". The smallest production FE was 332"

Ok,so what we got is the truck 302 used up into the early 1960's was based on the original Lincoln block and not the 239-312 Y block?
There are no FE 302's.And the so called expert is full of **** :D

Honestly everything I've read on FE's states that it is Ford-Edsel... MEL=Mercury Edsel Lincoln, FT is Ford truck. Thats just what I've seen...

The FE stood for Ford/Edsel,and the MEL stood for Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln.The FE series was the start of Ford big blocks.I had a 352 in a rusty, rotted '62 Mercury Monterey, and it was the only thing on that car that worked right.

Oh,I know.Trust me,I know, but each time I learn something new. This time I'm keeping my nose clean. And by the way,if there was an award for how many times someone can throw someone else under the bus,I'd present it to you personally:p

  26. The guys above that say FE = Ford-Edsel and MEL = Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln are CORRECT. Been using them for a few years now (1958 to present) and FE does in fact mean Ford-Edsel. The FE's came in 332, 352, 360(truck engine), 361(Edsel engine), 390, 391(truck engine), 406, 410, 427 and 428. The Mel's came in 383, 410, 430, 431(marine engine) and 462.

    Enough said.

  27. NO 302 FE! 302 Lincoln Y in trucks, Boss 302 and 302 SBF that is it. Oh, and maybe a .060 over 292.

The seller had a few engines, did he have one of these "302 FE" truck motors? Sounds like a fairy tale.

The FE name debate, that has been going on for years. Would love to see some FoMoCo do***entation on it one way or another.
