Hey Everyone, I am currently working on a 54 Chev 4dr which is my 1st car that I am doing myself and am playing with the idea of chopping it. Just looking for some advice as how to go about it, any pics of chopped 53-54 chevs so I can get an idea as to what look I would like best, how much to take out and/or basicly any help what so ever. I have just taken out all the 6 cylinder running gear and have a 283 that will be going in with a turbo 350 and a 55 chev rear end. I will be lowering it all around and that's when the thought about chopping it popped up. I think it would look pretty sweet. How often do you see a chick doing up, chopping and driving that kind of car? I know in my area not so much if ever. So I am quite excited about the prospect of chopping it but just need some info. Thanks for all your help in advace! Angi
May I suggest that, if you do decide to chop it, you also find doors from a 2dr donor car and do the 2dr conversion at the same time? Best of luck!
May be just me, but I'd suggest doing the tudor conversion first. The hardest thing about a chop is cutting curved gl***. Guess you could sink them, like the Merc in A.G.
I don't really plan on doing a 2 door conversion. I would like to keep it a 4dr. But thanks for the suggestion
PM or look for markanthony on here he has a 52(i think) chevy 4 dr chopped, he may be some help to you good luck!
Before you go too far, figure out how to handle the rear gl***, since the stock back window can't be cut. LOTS of good top chopping threads here.
Rear window is the biggest problem when chopping these, I'd start looking for an earlier chevy or ford, I'm using a 49 ford on mine. Chopping a 4 door is a little more difficult, but shouldn't be too much different than a 2 door. Do a search, there's a LOT of chop info on 54 chevy's. If I were closer, I'd buy that old motor from you.
I am thinking of doing the same thing to my 53 someone on here posted a good site it showed the chop but the text was in chinese so i could not read it. I have a four door also but I am keeping my 4 doors suiciding the rears I have read several different things some people find a shoebox ford and cut rear area around the widshield out and use that of course there are so many 48-50 shoebox fords lying around that should not be a problem to find lol. Others cut out around the window frame down to the package tray and then scab pieces back in I think that looks good anf you do not have cut the back wind shield. here is the chinese site http://www.calcl***ics.us/calcl***ics.chopped54.htm
If you are a family man,, leave it a 4 door.. they look cool,, and are practical.. shave rear handles..that way they can bail when they want.. and without rear handles,, a lot of people think it's a 2 door..and yes ,, CHOP IT..!!.. ..........nothing worse than getting out of your seat to let people out...
I like your idea of keeping it a 4 door. I like a 2 door conversion, if in the end it really looks like a 2 door, but most don't. A well chopped 4 door would be cool.
it' just like a 2 door chop, just have to mess with the back door area a lil and of course look for another back window... it's easy.........
you can buy a laminated rear gl*** for that car. and cut it to fit. or Bent gl*** inc. can make a new rear gl*** to your specs. they quoted me $1500.00 for mine. Chop it. keep the four doors.
Nope, I am definitly going to keep it a 4 door (or as I like to call it a 2dr with 2 emergency exits, LOL).
one word of advise is DO NOT attempt to use the rear window gl*** it never looks right. ive seen people lean it forward and it just looks like ***. this is not like a shoebox backwindow its a wraparound. when you lean the back window one of the following things happen... either the belt line comes up above the catwalk and makes a huge hump in front of the trunk or the one corner of the gl*** sinks below the beltline. eithe way it just looks horrible in my opinion. do what they did back in the day use lexan for the back window. thats what the moonglow had nobody ever complained about that car
