Hi bobw, your car looks great, I think that Tonto just rolled over in his grave to get a better look at it. Have you done a burnout with it yet? if so, I will put on the list of the cars that have done a burnout. And is that coupe about a 24 Dodge? Joe

  2. Job well done sir, job well done.

    Congrats,

Nice job. I got a question. That over flow container, was that used as inspiration or in flusteration? ;) Hope to see you down our way at Mokan time. If so remember there will be a race in Tulsa the night before Mokan.
You can have twice the fun in one trip.

    Again, Nice job.

What?! The fancy lettering on that gives it another 15 hp at the least.

    Awesome job Bob!

Be sure to take that Chrysler powered rail to your nearest Fiat dealership for your safety equip. government stimulus grant

Hope to see you at Mokan

Thankyou everyone for the positive responses to my little dragster. If I get team shirts, all my helpers will be "Tonto's":)
The Dodge in the background is a '25. Unfortunately I put a 350/350 in it. Not much imagination there. It is one of those Rodent Rods, so I can't talk about it on the HAMB.:p It was started by a friend who became disabled so I built most of it. The deal was he would drive it until he could no longer drive, then it would be mine. Unfortunately he only drove it a few times before he ended up in the Vet's Home.
Drewfus, I especially want to thank you for all the pictures and dimensions and advice you provided early in the build. It was invaluable.
I drank a lifetime of alcohol by the time I was 35 so I had nothing to do with emptying the Vodka overflow bottle.
We determined the throttle shaft is quite loose in one carb. It will hold 17 inches of vacuum and if I wing it and let it return to idle it will pop out the exhaust and have low vacuum.
Regarding travel, right now it looks much easier for me to go to the Nostalgia race in September at KCIR than MoKan. That's getting the cart before the horse(power). I need to get the thing running right and get all the safety apparel or I won't be going anywhere.

  7. no worries at all, glad that any info supplied helped, and just seeing it 'finished' as it is means it was worth the effort, again job well done, now sort out your safety gear and go and use it...;):D

    Cheers,

    Drewfus

Replaced the rear carb because of a sloppy throttle shaft. That helped the fluctuating vacuum at idle. The timing chain is very loose as evidenced by 10 degrees of timing bounce.
In spite of that I did manage a few black strips in the driveway. The gap you see is where the pig lays down for an instant and then takes off again. There are slight strips of rubber for about 40 feet. Driving technique? Carb adjustment? It isn't drag racing if there aren't any problems to solve.:D

I sold a hot rod a week or two ago. Waited a while to make sure the buyer didn't want to return it.:p With a little money in the pocket now, I ordered a helmet, neck collar, head sock, jacket, pants, gloves, arm restraints and safety harness. I should be ready to go to the Hot Rod drags Aug. 1, near Fargo, NoDak.
I'm so wierd...racing the thing is almost anticlimatic for me compared to building it. I'm already building something else, in my mind. Went junkyarding a few weeks ago and spotted some old tin...:D

Here I am in my helmet, jacket, neck collar, head sock, gloves and arm restraints. Also recieved a platinum seat belt/shoulder harness. After 2 years it can be sent to the manufacturer and recertified for another 2 years. One of the guys on this site mention the platinum series. Oh, the pants are back ordered.

A question to you experienced HA/GR racers: How do you keep from dying from heat prostitution? Wearing the stuff in the house just about roasted me alive. And that was without pants.:D

Welcome to the club. Nice outfit. Our local tech guys do require the pants.:D
If you think its bad in the house, just think how much weight you can loose while in the lane for an hour on a good day. Remember Less #'s = quicker ride. 2-3 races and you will pick up a tenth or two without any motor changes.:) Great car. Keep pictures coming at the track.

    Damn, boy, I do believe you're pastier'n I am .........

It gets bloody hot at the strips around here as most are essentially in the desert. I've had to wait out a couple nasty oil-downs (one nearly an hour and I was up next) in addition to the time waiting in the lanes.

I wear a cheap weed hat and keep my jacket open & gloves off in the lanes (and damn little under the suit), otherwise I'm suited up, arm restraints and all. I tuck the hat between my legs and pop the bucket & gloves on in fairly short order as needed.

So far they're not being sticky about the head sock or the collar for our middie but I'll likely get a skirted bucket if they do. Nor do they require both together as yet.

Someplace to hang the bucket's a good idea. If you have crew with you it's a bunch easier but I often hit the lanes alone.

  16. I think a while back I mentioned a feature to be bolted/welded to your cage.....facility to temporarily hold a umbrella....just wait till your all suited up in the staging lanes and there's an oil down or temoprary wait.....VERY hot.

Keep at it, and please save a bit more $$ for some pants, those white legs are going to get burnt...:D

    Cheers,

    Drewfus:)

Looks like I'll be umbrella shopping.:)
Dick, thanks for the staging lane strategy. That will help me a lot.
Old28, it sure wouldn't hurt if I did sweat off a few ponds.
I put the new belts in this morning. Am a bit confused by the arm restraints. Do they just slip on to the lap belt? Seems I've seen the metal loop on the restraints zip tied to the lap belt hardware. That would indicate the restraints stay with the lap belt. The must be loose enough to slip easily over the jacket sleeves to a point above the elbow. Am I on the right track?
Them legs ain't pastey. That is a normal Minnesota palor. I quit wearing shorts a long, long time ago. My grandkids call me Sponge Bob Sweat Pants, cuz that's what I almost always wear.

We have a sun shade and a fitting on our aft roll bar but have no place to stow the shade on the car, so I can't use it when I'm alone. Wish I could use the shade all the time but so far the hat's been doing fairly well.

Our style arm restraints have a slotted plate at the bottom end that we slip the leg "tongues" through before we push those tongues into the release housing.

The top end is velcroed to fit around whatever part of your arm will best keep it inside the cage. In our cage layout that's the elbow.

Our set-up releases the four tongues when the master release is turned either way, and the slotted plates fall off the two leg tongues in the process. The arm restraints then come out of the car with the driver, hanging from his elbows.

The concept is the thing. Whatever works best to restrain your arms safely but can still be released by a single motion to the release mechanism and allow you to be pulled out with no hinderance.

I'd have to see those that were strapped to the leg belts in light of that to understand how that particular installation would work smoothly.

My arm restraints have small loop at the bottom. I slip the lap belt through the loop before it connects to the main cam lock for each side. When you release the 5 point latch or cam your arm restraints release and stay with your arms. You should not have to take the restraint off your arm. This is the quickest way out of the race car if needed.

Grandkids are great, need to work that name in on your helmet. We have the "Snake", "Mongoose" and now "Sponge Bob". :)

Vector, Thanks for not "altering" me! BTW, I pushed my sweatpants up, I'm not wearing shorts. My wife was a little miffed when I wore my new outfit to bed.
Mr. Mac, If I ever win the lottery, I'm gonna have a Junior Fueler. SBC on nitro.
This dim witted Polack finally figured out the arm restraints. Thanks for getting me on the right track.
In another stroke of brilliance, I drilled out and retapped a hole in the head to a larger pipe thread for the heat gauge. Shortly thereafter, I found a fitting that would have worked without all the work.

Here's a piece of advice I hope no one ever needs.

If you are involved in a crash it's okay to get out of the car and move away. If you can't get out of the car do not remove any safety equipment until help arrives.

A few guys have been burnt because they pulled their helmets off or took their gloves off and threw them down in disgust...then the car caught fire.

The wife (Kathy Weeks) of a friend is an excellent sign painter. She did the lettering on the dragster. Tonight I picked up the 16" by 20" poster she made. I will have it on a tripod by the dragster in the pits. I'm getting 8 1/2" by 11" copies in black and white to hand out to interested parties, along with the rules sheet Toymaker kindly sent me. Toymaker & Old6, I hope you don't mind that I used images of your cars to show folks what this is all about.
Looks like Aug. 8 test and tune will be the first chance to run. Should have my pants by then.:D

The brochure is a trifold and looks like this:
It will be handed out to interested parties at the drags. I'll be running Test and Tune (assuming I pass tech) this Saturday. Hopefully, there will be interest in the car and I can hand out a few of these brochures.
    I got my pants today.
