Alright guys heres the story: My dear, sweet Auntie is getting a D-vorce from my Uncle. They have on their property a 54 Chevy Bel-Air. Thing is COMPLETE and IMMACULATE! Because she is a jilted wife and because I'm a sweet, caring, loving neice, my Aunt has decided to give me the car. So my question to you is, What is it worth? It has an orginal 32,000 miles on it. Complete interior and original paint. But I have NO clue about older Chevrolet cars.....any help would be appreciated!

    2 or 4 door?

Are you going to keep it, if you get it?

Free cars are the best cars, I got my 58 cadillac under similar cir***stances.

Whenever I'm wondering what an older car is worth, I'll go on www.collectorcartraderonline.com and do a search for them, preferably in your area, and just get an average of what they are asking.

I would say that depending on condition and the number of doors, it would be somewhere between $2000-10,000.

  4. How many doors?

Here's what Old Cars Price Guide says for #3-#2-#1.

    ------------ #3 ----- #2 ----- #1
    2d sed - $7880 - $13790 - $19700
    4d sed - $7840 - $13720 - $19600
    2d ht - $10800 - $18900 - $27000
    Conv - $17600 - $30800 - $44000
    4d wag - $9200 - $16100 - $23000

Now an example, by their figures a '54 convertible parts car (#6) is worth $1760 and a #5 restorable '54 convertible worth about $5000. But I sold one of each last summer, the parts car I got $850, the restorable car $2000. So wether or not they know what they're talking about, who knows.

A nice original is usually worth more than a restored car, but this book tends to run high and sedans are not as popular so they don't usually sell very easily. Which means the actual selling price is usually less than the book values.

#1 is as new or better than new, #2 is really nice but a couple steps from perfect, and #3 is supposed to be the average car show vehicle, it needs things but is too nice to tear apart to redo from the ground up.

I'd compare to ads in Hemmings and eBay and get a feel if you need a really specific value on it - just a general idea or for an appraisal, just get a copy of this magazine and go with one of the values in it.

Would you mind checking prices for a 58 cadillac coupe, 2 door, series 62?

I don't want to sell it, I'm just curious. My price guide is way out of date.

    Thanks

  8. This is from VMR price guide, their numbers are always lower than the other guide that was posted.

Ha! I bet you would!! It's an 8 Cyl car with a 3 speed. She only has 2 doors, but I can't remember for the life of me if she was a hardtop or a sedan. That website is really useful thanks!

  11. Sorry but it isn't an original V-8, at least with the original car.

They didn't put 8 cylinders in Chevys till '55 so it's either hotrodded/swapped in or you "typo'd" and meant inline 6. Or you typo'd and meant '55 Bel Air!
If it has a factory 3 speed it's probably a post model because 99% of the HT models I ever saw had powerglides in them.

Screw the family history, show me the money.
Yea, I've got nieces like that too.
I gave one of them a necklace owned by her grandmother and great grandmother. She got something like $75 bucks for it when she pawned it the next day.
Just tell your aunt to sell it and give you the cash so you don't have to deal with it at all.

Sorry, I guess you and I don't see life the same way.
    I'll shut up now.

No (eating crow here) I didn't typo. I haven't been to the ranch to see it yet, but I have 20 pages of pictures of it. ONLY picture I don't have is of the engine bay. Auntie doesn't know how to open the hood:D She didn't even know it was manual until I saw a clutch pedal in a picture. I've been talking my 13 year old cousin into digging thru the carpet and trunk for me to look for rust. So far so good! I told you guys I didn't know **** about these older Chevy's:D I can admit my stupidity....I asked if it was an 8 or 6 and she said 8 but oh well! Then when I realized it was 3 on the tree I REALLY started to wonder--gee how much fun 8 cyls and 3 speeds:rolleyes: Sure clears up a load of questions! I figured since Ford went V8 in 54, so did Chevrolet....teaches me to start ***uming!:)

    Thanks!

You ****:p That's not fair to ***ume that I'm just like your family! I figured, If I opened my fat yap and said hey I have this....then somebody would
    1. tell me what it's worth
    2. correct me if I have something wrong ie engine displacement
    3. I'd learn something about 54 Chevs
I also figure, if she gets in a bind...as you do in a divorce, then I can sell the car for her and give her back the $ to put on an apartment, car payment or groceries for the kids....

haha I think shes talking OHV here

shes right with 54 as first OHV for ford, 55 for chev

this summer I was at a farm auction and I watched a VERY nice 35k OG mile 53 4 door sell for $3500, it was probably one of the nicest original cars left, the paint was even nice and shiny still. The day of the sale they had it parked and idling outside the whole day.....purred

so if yours is as nice as this, and a 2 door, I would think that $4-6k wouldnt be out of the question, expecially if its a hardtop.

i paid $4,000. for my old 2 door sedan that was in the same condition as it is in the picture here except for the hubcaps. I bought it from an 81 year old man that had it sitting in his driveway with a flat tire, been there for years. I'm pretty sure 54 Bel Air 2 door hardtops had an option of power windows in the front only. I really like mine.
