  2. You guys are even starting to influence my lilly white ass! Wish hadnt sold those 14" Fentons to Ray now!

  3. If it weren't for Up In Smoke, I wouldn't be the car guy I am today. I heard the soundtrack first, then watched the movie. I absolutely drooled for luv macheen. I even wanted to make an accurate model of Cheech's ride when I was in high school. I, like so many others, have evolved. I dig just about all traditional rides and yes I dig techie rides too, but my first love was most certainly traditional lowriders. [IMG]

The only board I have found is rollerzonly (I think), it's not oldskool, but modern and crazy.

ha i watched boulevard nights today laying around recovering from having my wisdom teeth removed. second time this month. the main problem i could see with a traditional lows board is the people you would really want around aren't even computer folk. still i think it's a good idea that just needs someone to step up and get it done. i'm computer stupid and do good just to get around here so i'm out. would be cool though...ken....

    butt,
your monte needs a set of tru spokes to me. it looks so good now it could only be better with that change and lifted. what sort of set up you gonna use? something crazy or just a basic lift.

now a question. i've seen alot of stuff that actually says the green buick in the middle of hot rods and customs of the 60s was rumored to be the first or one of the first cars lifted. i've seen the car listed as belonging to troy hefner and other saying it belonged to zoochi. i know it was lifted by bill hines when it was a brand new car and the candy fade job was done by winfield. anybody got any other info on the car. i considered cloning it for a long time. only bagged instead of lifted and with different wheels which i have been told it got skylark wires at some point which is what i would want to run. anyone got any other info oon that car?...ken....

  5. The info that I read in Lowrider was Ron Aguire's X-sonic was the first equipped with hydraulics. That (I believe) is a Starbird built, Watson (I know) painted full kustom. It said in the article that Ron got tired of being pulled over for being too low ALL THE TIME. So his dad told him about the hydraulic arms used on airplanes. His dad found some and equipped the car with them. The first time he was pulled over, the cop did a U-ie because he saw how low the car was. Once the cop turned around, he had already raised the car and the cop couldn't figure out what the deal was.

He went on to say he got out of that one. [IMG]

I saw that this post had made it up to the top of the list again, and had to post a reply this time.

I grew up in a really brown area of Oxnard, CA in the '70s and it was all about early sixties Chebbies with Cragar SS in 13 or 14 inch diameters and 5.20s. By the '80s, I remember rollin in my buddy's "Banana Boat" pearl yellow '65 Impala wagon. It was only juiced in the rear, but it'd hit 27" with only two old school pumps powered by four 48V batteries the local fire department sold to him out the back door when they were replaced during "routine maintenance" on the trucks. The car looked wicked with the skirts on, but always looked lower with them off. I remember getting into the boat outside McDonalds when a serviceman obviously originating from the deep South stopped us to point out that we had a "flat tire". You should have seen his eyes pop when Jerry juiced it up, and then dropped it as we trailed sparks all the way around the lot from the magnesium blocks bolted under the rear bumper. One time we smuggled nine people into the drive-in and only paid for the two in the front seat. All it took was the double limo tint and a blanket to pull that one off.

Oxnard used to have a good cruising scene in the mid eighties. Saviers Road was the spot until the Crips/Bloods moved north around '88 or so. Before that, you could cruise without fearing drive-bys and nobody was selling enough drugs to fund the over-gold look yet.

I agree Gowjobs.....lowriding lost me when everybody was goldplating everything they possibly could.....and Gold wheels.........just looks tacky to me.........

but 14 inch Trues and chrome.....will make any car look chingon!

  9. Here in the BAY AREA San Jose,Hayward,Union City,Newark,Oakland is where you'd find your low riders.I remember back in the 70's visiting my aunt in Oakland. She had these neighboors that were hardcore low rider vatos..Always had a nice selection of Chevy's in the front yard....they were really cool people..I remember my dad talking to them in Spanish...They would trip out...my dad looks like a whiteboy but grew up in the 50's speaking only Portuguese and Spanish....Us Portagees started the whole Kustom Low Rider thing in the first place..Because in the 40's and 50's the poor old Portagee Farmers started selling thier land for development and became rich..They were the first Goldchainers too! hehehe..I know I'm gonna take shit for this one... 12. I've been watching this post ever since it came back to the top, and I gotta agree with k9racer, great post! Reminds me of the old school HAMB before the newbie invasion started 3 or 4 years ago.

Anyway, I decided I've got to get in on this, too. Lowriding has always been a big part of my family. More so a few years back than now, because most of my lowriding cousins got into trouble and are doing time. My cousin Martin was probably the most hard core one. He always had a lifted kar and top notch kandy paint, as well as the best wire wheels out at the time. He always had an Alpine, a simple amp and lots of tweeters! Back then, everybody used to "bump treble"! We'd listen to Zapp, Tower of Power, War, whatever. When he wanted to listen to oldies, he'd fire up the underdash 8-track and break out some Chuck Berry or Elvis! Once in a while they would swing by my house and pick me up. I thought that was pretty kool because I wasn't old enough to drive, but I was definitely kar krazy. At that time, everyone into lowriders used to cruise 38th Avenue. It was unreal how many lowriders used to roll out there. Back then, Marty had a '72 Grand Prix with a kandy root beer brown paint job with tons of 'flake, gold and brownish pinstriping on it. Curly-Q style that the lowriders back then had. It was lifted front, back and side to side--one of the first ones in Denver. We'd hit 38th and people would go nuts when he'd start dropping sides! What a blast! I always liked when he would drop the front and lay sparks down the street. There used to be this little grocery store called Tj's that was on 38th. There were big windows all the way along the building. The store would be closed by the time the cruising started, so it was dark inside. He would always tell me to look in the windows and you could watch the sparks as you went by!

I plan on building a lowrider again some day--maybe a bomba. I've been trying to collect parts to have ready when the day comes. So far I have alot of old time accessories like a red headed flashlight and holder, rear window blinds, fender guides, curb feelers, traffic light finder, etc, etc. I'm finding that the stuff lowriders used in the 70s and early 80s are the hardest to find. The light bars that go under the dash we always called Bowmans. I've been looking for one for years and no luck. How about the red bar lights in the back window that used to flash from the center out when you'd step on the brakes? Don't know what they were called, but every lowrider had them. Also, organ pipe speaker covers. They used to be made of metal back then, not plastic like now! I did manage to score some TVs--rabbit ear antennas that went on the side rear window, as well as some big center cap Tru-Classics. What accessories or lowrider stuff do you closet lowriders have? Let's hear it.................................E

Man, add some scollwork pinstriping here and there in brown and gold and change the wheels out to Tru-Spokes, and that'd be straight out of '82!

  15. yeh Gow;it's too bad that the old style true spokes are worth more than new wires
(thats always been the plan tho) [IMG]

THAT! is what I think of when I hear Lowrider, I think someone above hit the nail on the head when they said "What ya name it depends on your zip code." Personally I've heard Folks here are VERY hung up on terms, which is wierd because different zips different terms ALL The same damn rides.
BTW that was a nice looking car in the background too.

    Well Don Butt Reynolds,

I must say after reading all these posts, it looks like a website with a great message board for lowriders came to you. Either that or dare I say, the HAMB is a website for lowriders. [IMG] This is one of the longest and most enjoyable posts I've seen. Helpful too since my project is a 64 Impala that I've insisted be four doors, shaved and lowered. I'm about 3/4's done and will try to post a pic soon.

    The Monte Carlo looks great!

Luckystiff, regarding that green buick from Hot Rods and Customs of the 60's, that is the baddest car in that book , perfect lines, stance, paint, etc. I also like the fact that it (64buick) is an often overlooked car. Clone it!

    chris,
i considered doing a close to clone of it for years. i've taken alot of hints from that car for the rebuild. i've built 3 differnt tube grille mock up trying to get it to the perfect one like in the green car. probably the few things i would change would be wheel selection, which i have heard that car had skylarks shortly after the few pics you see of it were taken. mine's got tbird guts(66 rears, 67buckets,more comfortable) i think white guts may have looked alittle better which is dumb in my case since the black interior i have is spotless. i think i need 3 more of these cars cause i got about 3 different ways i want to build it.haha. i actually passed on another one a month or so ago because i'm out of room. if i don't build a semi clone of it this time i will in the future. oh yeah i would probably do bags instead of juiced to as this is going back to daily status when done. your right about it being a much to overlooked body style. funny i picked the car up for it's drive train years ago. was gonna put the nailhead in a '50 ford. got the buick called the guy to arrange pickup of the ford and he had sold it. i figure it's a good running car despite the rust so i reg. it and drive it. within a week i had myself a love affair i've never had with a car. i have no idea why it's stuck to me like it has. it will never be sold. who knows i change my mind about paint for this car a bit and it's months before it's close to repaint anyhow. imitating winfields spray job on it intimidates me a bit to. those are mighty big shoes to step into.

anybody got any more info on the green car???????? i've heard bits and pieces of stuff over the last few years. it was supposedly in a coupla magazines in the mid 60s but i haven't found 'em. one source says it belonged to one guy. another source says zocchi had the car built and sold it to that guy a few weeks after it was done. i have heard confirmation that winfield did the paint and hines did the suspension. other than that the car is a mystery. anyone know zocchi that may can confirm if he had the car built? anyone see Gene and can ask him about it? i'd like to find more info if i could. who the owner was what happened to it and so on...ken....

Starbird didn't build that. Hines started installing juice in the early '60s, but Ron might just have been one of the first. He's a cool guy (Aguire, but so is Hines, just older!).

Anyway, juice is good, when it doesn't leak!

Butt-man...next time you head back out, bring the Monte--and the pink slip!
