I have a 9" that was narrowed and everything to fit my 40 ford p/u and it has a mini spool in it right now, I was wondering if I should take that out and put new guts in or just leave it and see what its like! Just lookin for suggestions, Thanks!
Terrible street manners and if you run it for even a short time use race car wheel studs and not parts-store versions. Good luck
WATCH OUT!!! for that mini spool on the street! Shorty54 on here had one in his '54 Ford last summer. 80+ s***ches later the new ride will be limited slip.
If its a just for looks car that you plan to drive often ,i'd take it out.I have ran a mini spool on the street in my daily and it constantly gave me greif.Cant turn for **** ,ate up tires twice as fast ,broke axles ,broke lug washers ,and was real unforgiving on slick corners or wet roads. If your gunna be racing most of the time and limited street driving its doable. This is one of those personal desions you have to make with your hotrod. Some say no way ,some say no problem .I wouldnt do it again on a street car.My drag only car on the other hand has a full spool and i love it ...
I think they're even worse in a light car versus a heavy car... You have lots of non-spool/non-open differentials, go that way, spool is a good way to get outta control in a hurry (I had a friend with one in a hotrodded 70's Camaro for some reason. That thing ****ED).
Thanks Guys, I think I have found a buddy to swap me his factory 9" stuff for mine, seeing how he has a malibu done up for the strip, it would be better for him! Thanks alot for the help!
Bad choice , when I take the the dirt modified with a Winters quickchange out on asphalt It goes straight when trying to make right turns. To push car around in driveway I pull both axles.
I've run in the past, and will soon again, run Detroit Lockers... Love 'em! I like a locker of some sort as compared to a clutch setup, but admittedly I've always had a pretty freakish large amount of bad luck with them, I don't recall ever having a Ford that the LSD stayed in good shape, 9" and 8.8". Damn things.. *grumble grumble* But that doesn't mean they're no good, bad luck is bad luck.
I've got a Detroit Locker in my avitar and will never own another one. It's just to aggressive and noisey in a lite open car.
Throw that **** out and get some new gears ! That won't last long and if you have wide tires , it won't be able to handle **** before they break ! No a pretty site either ! Be glad you asked first !
If it's an older one, they've been greatly improved upon... The new ones make very little noise. I've never used an old one, but the new ones are really quiet.
