Seeing as how I live less than a quarter mile from Coot's Lake, I'm thinking that Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup and I can make it. I'll get the word to everybody in our club at Rockmart. DIRECTIONS: Coot's Lake is just off US 278 about 3 miles east of Rockmart GA. Coming eastbound (from Rockmart). Go to mile marker 27. As soon as you p*** MM 27, you will see intersection of Coot's Lake Rd. to left and Old Atlanta Hwy to right. Turn left onto Coot's Lake Rd. You will see signs for Silver Comet Trail, and you will see Coot's Lake Station convenience store on your left. After you turn onto Coot's Lake Rd., go a couple hundred yards and you will see entrance to Coot's Lake on right just before you get to Silver Comet Trail crossing (old Seaboard Railroad). Coming Westbound on 278 (from Dallas): Cross Polk County line, first mile marker you will see is 29, then 28. Go about 3/4 mile past MM 28, you will see intersection of Coot's Lake Rd to right and Old Atlanta Hwy to left. You will see the lake on your right just before you get to intersection. At the intersection you will see Coot's Lake Station convenience store on right and signs for Silver Comet Trail. Turn right onto Coot's Lake Rd., rest of directions as above.
Bring your bicycle if you're into that. It is a really scenic ride to an old railroad tunnel (just a couple miles). The ride in the other direction goes past a nice pasture, a winding creek and heads into Rockmart. That is THE BEST section of the Silver Comet Trail. If my son's back was better (he had spinal fusion on the second), we'd be all over that. I'd try to figure some way to carry the tandem bike on the little Rambler sedan (trailer hitch?).
Ok I give. Found the web site. Can't find a date on the special events link. Anybody want to share a date?? I'll bring my bicycle as my 65 is years away from driving still.
So where's Dallas (not Texas, I presume)? What does it have to do with a car show in Rockmart? Sorry, but you'll have to help out this Georgia geography challenged Alabamian with more info for all of this to make sense to me!
Dallas is just down the road a peice on 278. Or, if you're pedalling, it's through a nice stretch of paved bike trail - bring water, there's none in that section once you p*** the store by Coot's Lake. August 22nd. The Rambler sedan should be doing fine by then, and I should be able to fix up my old Schwinn Continental or figure a way to carry the Tandem. Maybe even stick the 2 together! Getting the '66 Apache popup in shape would be pushing it, though. I've got a goal! I'll be the rotund guy in the Rambler. Rotund Rambler Guy - maybe I ought not post that.
Dallas block party is the cruise in on the 4th Saturday of every month held in downtown Dallas around the old courthouse square and down the "strip" through town. This past Saturday had a good turnout, even with the heat, probably 250 cars.
That would be Dallas GA, not Dallas TX. Coming out of Alabama on US 278 East, Cedartown is the first town you come to, then Rockmart, then Dallas. Date is Saturday 8/22. Dallas cruise-in is one of the bigger ones in NW GA. Don't know how many will be at the Coot's Lake show, but it's a great location for a car show, and most of the regulars who come to the Dallas cruise-in will probably be there.
Hopefully all have the info above and will be able to attend. There will be a "Coots Pick" trophy to be awarded. More details to follow.
I actually knew the "original Coot," C. C. "Coot" Hulsey, who built Coots Lake back in the '50s. He and my grandfather Wadsworth grew up together, Coot and Lillie Mae were our neighbors across the road when I was growing up. The man was an engineering genius even though he didn't have a lot of formal education. No telling what he could have done if he'd actually had the opportunity to study engineering formally. He could figure out how to do just about anything.
Bringing the Coot's Lake show thread back to the top. Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup and I are looking forward to that 200 yard drive on Saturday.
The only way this show could be more convenient for me would be if it were held in my front yard. By the time I shift from 3rd to 4th, I'll be there.
