The FOR SALE sign is a magnet for all ***hole to come and do what they want ! They are not car people !
If I see one for sale I will look and lay on the ground to check it out . If the windows are open , I will even stick my head inside but never lean on the car door . I always look around and whoever is the closest to the car I ask if this is yours ! BUT that's just me !
Most all car guys & gals will respect your ride but the door & hood slammer are just regular ***holes that have nothing to drive but a Vega !

Next time do the print out or write down everything that's under the hood and the rest of the what's in it stuff . As for the hood , OPEN the hood so people won't be tempted to open & slam the hood and LOCK THE DOORS !

This is just my 2 cents ! :D

I had some db looking at the truck the other day. Leaning on the corner of the cab talking to some other db. I came out of the store about a minute later and he was already off it. I'll never get it.

Until someone lays cash in my hand and I put ***le in theirs its mine. My car my rules.

  4. I had a HAMB guy come out to my wrecking yard when it was still open. He was looking at the cars and such. I don't mind if people open hoods and doors, as long as they close them after they are done looking.

Well this guy opened the hood of my 51 Packard. It did not open so easy. So he forced it.
The reason it did not open easily is because there were parts on the hood. He managed to force an interior door handle through the windshield that got stuck between it and the hood.

Did he cop to it? No. Nor did he buy anything.

I guess a part of doing business, but it ****s just the same.

  5. Bruce...I think you have every right to feel like you do. I will gurantee you, even with the for sale sign and all, that if it had shiny paint and big billet wheels those folks would not have treated it that way. But now you know to NEVER leave the keys in it or like johnnykck said, they will crank it or worst test drive it without permission.

Now THIS at***ude is my pet peeve! By damn, NO, everything is NOT for sale. Some things are not for sale at ANY price. I've got four vehicles that I would not sell no matter what astronomical number was offered.

It has nothing to do with "This generation". People have been doing this for YEARS! Grandad told me it was customary back in the 30's & 40's that you would see a car at a car lot and open the hood, open the doors, whatever, without waiting for a salesman. Well that same mentality carried over to ANY car for sale. Front yard, parking lot, Car show, where ever. If it was For Sale you had an invitation to check it out.
I think it's going to continue to happen for ever.
Here's how i handle it. If I have a car for sale at an event, I try and stay right with it. If I go for a beer or sandwich, I either leave the hood and doors open or I lock em up with a note saying I'll be back. Either way no one has to touch anything. And if it's open and someone sits in it, I don't get upset, they are looking at a car for sale afterall.

Much different if it's your car being displayed for a show and not flyin For Sale signs, then we're gonna have words

#1 When you think they ain't around or won't see you .
#2 When you have to wiz really bad.

This happens all the time , I am at my swap spot, cars for sale are 100 yards away , all day I have to go over and close the hood because some idiot opened it to check it out ! Yes it has a For Sale sign and my cell number, but I never get a call !

I had the same thing at car shows, people opening the door and putting there kid in it ,

its happened way to many times , I have come unglued a few times and gone off on these idiots , all I get is a blank stare , they do not understand they did something wrong,

I even had a door handle pulled off a show car once by someone wanting to open the door of a drag car !

LEAVE it alone unless you are given permission !

I would like to thank the majority of you for understanding what respect is all about. There are a few that don't get it, but perhaps they will respect the majority and change their ways.

I own a used car lot. Everything is for sale. Does that give license to touch, slam, steal, etc? Of course not, but it happens. Way too much theft and it is for specific items. How sad that another car guy would do this.

We have signs hanging, have signs in each car and yet we hear the hoods slamming daily. We have even had guys jump into cars are start them...now they are all locked up. How sad we can't leave them open for inspection.

It only takes a few to ruin it for everybody. Some are on the HAMB, too.

Thanks again for respecting other people's property. I hope you extend it to used car lots as well. Afterall, those vehicles have owners, too.

Although off topic, i laugh every time i hear the "everything's for sale" line...
I have one car that means more to me than cash...i've been offered more than it's worth ( in my honest opinion) a few times and p***ed with no hesitation.
Now, for the topic at hand :D...
As was mentioned. A for sale sign only states it's for sale, nothing else. It sure as hell dosn't give anyone permission to do anything to it aside from look at it with thier eyes..If a closer look is required, the owner should be asked, or contacted if he/she is not around..period.
Of course, that's in a perfect world, which we are not in...
DE SOTO's idea is a good one in my opinion as well. Just write right on the sign " Please do NOT touch..ask first"...If they still do what they want, they were warned ahead of time...so...
As was mentioned, a for sale sign is also an ***hole magnet...
It's part of the "game" like it or not...Just hope that you only have to deal with them every now and again and not all the time.

Uhh? Ok, I guess am too dumb to understand this. Maybe this is just some off the charts humor I am missing. But, if I understand this correctly and this is not a joke, you taught your kids to sneak into other people's cars and piss in them? Why not steal the radios and just set them on fire when they are done too? Am I missing something here?

Regardless, I was always taught you ask for clear and direct permission before going onto or touching other people's property. I don't care if it is a car at a dealership lot. You don't touch stuff that is not yours without specific permission from someone who clearly has the right to give it to you. And just asking the person nearest to the car isn't good enough. You also need to make sure they have authority to be granting you that apparent permission. That is just plain simple basic respect and common sense that sadly not many people seem to have anymore.

Conversely, I wouldn't trust anyone at a car show not to f-up something I cared about and left unattended and unsecured. Never leave stuff unattended and unsecured. Most people won't do something you will regret, but there is always enough in the crowd that will if given the opportunity. You either just need to learn to live with it and not let it bother you or do what you need to to make sure they don't get the opportunity - or some compromise of both. **** does happen and a lot of it comes from dumb ***es who have to ruin everything for everyone else.

We are giving people way too much credit here. Of course they are gonna open doors and hoods why? because they are idiots and idiots are everywhere. So go ahead and save the frustration and put it on the sign. (See owner for info dont open my doors dont open my hood please). Yeah I agree you shouldnt have to but you do. So you might as well just do it and save yourself the headache, and the time you can never get back trying to teach an idiot not to be an idiot.

Hot Rod Don gets it!! Opening a door or hood at a car lot is the universal call-signal for sales help.

I'm not so sure many in this thread understand the difference between selling a car, and trolling with a for-sale sign. Acting like a seller will bring people acting like buyers.

Wow, that's ridiculus! I wouldn't touch anyone elses car even if it was for sale unless I had permission. I wouldn't want people to do that to me so I wouldn't do it to them.

that may be true at a new car store or at a used lot that sells every day cars, but not at my place. I feel it is a signal of disrespect if that happens. And you know what, those guys NEVER buy a thing. The guys that want to buy a car from me almost always call or email for an appointment, stop at the office first and ALWAYS ask for permission to inspect the car beyond what can be seen by a walk-around.

I am not seeking an arguement, simply stating what goes on at my car lot. We specialize in traditional hotrods, too.

So in summary, I will stick with the vast majority contributing to this thread and recommend that those of you wishing to buy a car always error on the side of caution and respect. Please ask.

Shifty, if you come to my place and open hoods/slam doors, you will be met with the rath of one angry Wop, bobwop:D

If I drive down the street , see a For sale sign on the lawn, can I just open the front door , walk in , inspect the Frig for beer and sit down on in the easy chair ?

    HELL NO !

so why is a for sale sign on a car saying its "open house"

Deal with that ***hole same as anyone mistreating your property.

  23. I grew up with a dad who was persistent on treating all vehicles with respect. When I was little, I didn't think much of shutting the door gently, but he made sure to let me know that slamming it wasn't acceptable. Hell, leaning up against, or god forbid, sitting on the hood or trunk, was forbidden...especially on the older cars. But, all of his yelling at me everytime I did it as a kid made me do the same thing when I got my first car, and every one since then. I cringe when someone gets in or out of my vehicle and slams the door, then they get an *** chewing. Same goes for leaning against or attempting to sit on the car...even if it's a piece of ****. It's MY piece of ****...have respect.

Regardless, you weren't expecting someone to slam the hood, and you didn't want to make a big deal out of something and you let it p***, but it will probably keep your eyes glued to every person who comes up to your truck next time around.

I have a similar story where I was at a show and a woman was trying to pull my hood down on my '37. and at the same show a couple of kids were running and jumping on the running boards of the cars..mine included. some people have no respect for other peoples property these days.

I had my 47 Chevy in a INDOOR car show once, ropes and stantions, the whole deal, and walked up to find a drunk couple have gone over the ropes and are in my truck, with full beers! Needless to say I nearly lost it, but didn't want to go totally nuts until I got them outta the truck for fear they'd do something stupid to the truck. Once they were out, I had regained some composer, so I sternly informed them the specific degree of dumb *** they had achieved.

I've seen this sort of stuff for years. I remember being a teenager, sitting behind a buddy's 57 wagon talking to him, and a guy walks up right in front of us (I could have reached out and touched him) and proceeds to open the rear hatch on the wagon! It seems like people tend to view car shows like theme parks, once they pay their entry, they've got the right to do anything they want.

I will admit that putting a for sale sign might invite a little more scrutiney than would normally be tolerated, such as sticking a head through the window, but when it comes to opening things up and/or handleing things, much less getting in, is strictly a no no.

Some have stated that it's just a penalty you pay for putting for sale on it, but what you have to consider is the cir***stances. Anything, whether it be a house, a car, or a piece of art, that is privately owned should not be handled in the same manner as an object on a car lot or in a business when the intent of all things there, and of the business it general, is to sell things. This is where we have a problem, because these same people who feel en***led to everything at the show don't see a difference between a car show and an auction or a car lot. I don't blame ya for being pissed, but you can't stop stupid people from being stupid. Now if these were "car guys", they should know better, if they're "civillians", then they need to be educated, harshly.

As for me, ever since that incident at the indoor show, I look my doors at shows when I'm not around. Mines old enough it doesn't have push down door locks, but the lift up door handle on the driver door and a key lock on the p***enger door. Yeah, they could reach inside, but they seem a lot less likely to do that if the outside door handle doesn't open it. And if your going to try to sell it, go ahead and open the hood and beat them to the punch.

You can't fix stupid folks, but you can try to slow it down a little.

  26. If you have a For Sale sign on it you have to expect that. Either stick around to head them off at the p***, or lock it up. I've been known to open hoods on cars I see for sale to check them out. But I also close them and don't **** around. I like to be able to check the oil and things for obvious problems, without the owner standing over me. At a car show, that's different, if the dude is around you find them if you're serious about a car.

I remember years ago a guy had his '60 Chevy out at a show, like the first outing, and some ***hole scratched his fresh paint. I think that's about when I decided I could care less about showing a car myself, that I have a car to drive for my own enjoyment, not to bust my *** hand polishing just to collect a few trophies with it when I could be out driving it instead.

You ought to be angry! Cause if I don't have sales help by the time I get a hood or door closed......I just figure they're playing hard to get and that's not a tactic I respect........so I take my money elsewhere. :D

Howcome so many have interwoven the act of inspecting a FOR SALE vehicle with disrespectful slamming of the door/hood? Are you guys really that simple minded? They're different things.

I'd say there is a difference for most car-guys here, and the general public. In my experience, a used car lot of generic used merchandise, is an open invitation for a more indepth inspection if you are more than a tire kicker. If you are 'just lookin' keep lookin' and limit the touchin'.
Someones personal property for sale is just that, their personal property! It's not yours, and until it is, get permission for a test fit or more up-close and personal inspection.

Didn't your parents teach you anything?!

At the VERY LEAST an interested tirekicker should tap the shoulder of the nearest guy and ask if they know where the owner is... Then wait for the owner to return!
