I am building a 36 chevy bobber style p/u. I need to get a ***le but the only thing from the original truck that I am using is the cab. I have a ***le for the original truck but it was a 1 1/2 ton. State of IL website says for custom vehicle ***le you need ***les, bill of sales, MSO's, and vin numbers for engine, ch***is, and body. The frame was built by a friend so I have no paperwork for it. The body ***le is for a 1 1/2 ton, and the engine I bought from a friend and am building. Has anyone in Il gone through this process and was it a pain in the ***? Any help is much appreciated!
My 50 is ***led as a 2 ton (10,000 lbs+) and looks like a 1/2 ton. I have never had a problem. Why would you want to attract attension because of a special ***le or plate? Register your 1 1/2 ton 36 Chevy as a 36 Chevy pickup, insure it according to the ***le vin, and drive it. Gene
what he said. But they will ask when you ***le it what engine and what not. I'm not one to bs, so im going the legit way and they have paperwork that a cop has to inspect the vehicle,record all the serial numbers,and sign it. Doesnt seem like to big of a deal.
I would cut the vin off the old frame and weld it on the new frame and call the frame a little modified.
Don't you have to have a special plate for a truck over so many tons, or can you just run a regular b cl*** truck plate?
Then you might invest in a stamp set. Although my book says the serial is on a tag on the dash or cowl somewhere, so you may not need that. Just use the ***le, why cause headaches for yourself?
Plates are bought for the weight intended to be carried by the owner. I run "B truck" plates because I never intend on weighing more then 8,000 lbs. Should I ever exceed the 8,000 lbs plates, and they run me across the scales, they can and will nail me for exceeding the plate weight. My truck has been on the road for at least 7 years and i have never been questioned, but then, it looks like a pickup and I usually don't do stupid stuff much any more. Gene
