Hey guys, I am looking to put a stereo in the golvebox of my 50 chevy. I was wondering if anybody has a pattern to follow, or is there anybody out there that makes this or???????? The glovebox is gone just the door, I am planning on making a small flat plate to hold the radio, any advice, help or whatever would be appreciated....
Get a piece of cardboard, cut to fit, recut to fit better, chunk it cause you cut too much off, get another piece, cut to fit......... then transfer it to a piece of steel or aluminum plate.
Dude you are a visionary...why did't I think of that?????? I was wondering if anybody has or had a template already......
I was gonna do the same thing in my 50 chevy. Came up with a better idea. I picked up a decent after model old chevy under dash tissue dispenser. I drilled out the pop rivets on the front, planning on putting a small set of hinges on the front to flip it down & mount the radio inside the box. Just a thought.....
when I did the radio in my old 49 sedan I left the box out. I bent up a piece of stainless and bolted it where the original box went, and left the sides open. made a couple of brackets and hung the radio from the stainless piece. I was kind of thinking if I put it in a box there would be excess heat. especially if I threw some junk in there along with the stereo. the coolest way I've seen it done in these cars is to hinge the speaker grille and put the stereo in the center behind it. then you still have a glove box to keep your junk in.... plus it's a ***** to reach all the way across to the glove box and change CD's if you are driving solo. Chevsofthe40s.com sells repop glove boxes just like original.
When I was 16 and wanted to hang a tapedeck in an O/T car that I would have had to hack up to put it in the stock location, I took a piece of junk tin and cut it and made it so it could hang under the dash. I'll never have a radio on the right side of the dash again, but it worked and looked good enough. I didn't even use a template. It ain't that hard. If I was putting one of these new ones that's just square with no knobs in a dash I'd do the same thing, except I'd make my tin to fit a radio mount kit for like mid-80s GM cars, since they're easy to bolt into place.
I don't know anything about 50 chevy's, but unless the glovebox is in the center, I wouldn't do it. My current radio is in the glovebox, and it is unusable when driving. Can't see ony of the readouts, and have to feel around for the knobs like I was getting laid for the first time.
Thanks for the ideas guys, and the Dimebag reference-u can **** my nut.....I'm a huge Pantera fan and the death of Darrell "dimebag" Abbott just plain ****ed.(best concert I have EVER seen) I haven't touched weed in along time-miss it somedays but spending time with the family is most important thing now. Also the stereo I have is remote controled which making the controls not a problem. Also the previous owner took the glovebox out so there is just a hole there now-I love the idea of dropping the center grill though....has anybody out there done it, and if so is it a really nasty job or pretty easy??? I'm trying to go stealth here and while the tissue box is cool, I am trying to keep the dash uncluttered..... thanks again guys!
there is a 50 fastback around that has removed the clock and radio panels, and has 2 speaker grilles side by side... or some variation of that. I saw it a couple times before I saw it opened and you couldn't even tell it was not bolted down solid. not sure how he did it but I'm sure a couple trips to the hardware store for some hinges and latches would take care of that. I think I might try those magnetic latches like stereo cabinets have where you push it and it pops open.
Great idea-now I just gotta figure out if I have any skill or luck....God knows I ain't got the good looks, so hopefully I got something else. thanks again...
