Not around here they're not. The Victoria Police is running on empty. I was at a job last night and the cops that came told me they were the only car in pretty much the whole northern suburbs of Melbourne...and they were tied up at our job. Hope nobody else needed help.

Sorry for the O/T rant...Doc, where's my meds

Terrible to see such a beautiful old car in that state. Makes me wince when I imagine the "moment of truth". Glad that everyone involved will be ok.

Hard to believe that neither the driver or the p***enger got hurt any worse than they did. It's pretty obvious that seatbelts made a difference in this accident.

I wouldn't worry about preaching seatbelts to those who are "uninitiated", they've had the benefit of years and years of public service announcements, if they don't want to use them, then I say "fine, don't." Natural selection will clear things up for us all:D

I studied my A frame and I don't think a head on or side impact can get into the ****pit. Because the lump is hard bolted to the frame at the firewall it acts as a cross brace. The engine m*** makes this point the strongest brace in the frame. Also because the frame is a open frame and not boxed (if org) the frame would fold at the engine mounts.
If you look at the pics, the frame folded to the p***enger side. It would be interesting to see other pics of head on impacts (for engineering discussion only) to see if crush depth has ever reached into the ****pit. This not to be morbid but for what we as A owners with org setups can possibly expect and ways to further provide safety for ourselves and p***engers.

You are very LUCKY ! Someone was looking out for you that day ! I am very sorry to hear about your accident . I do hope this finds everyone doing well !
In my teen years we didn't have to wear seat belts and I didn't . I had 3 accidents ( Non my fault) One drivers side collision and 2 head on ! Totaled 2 cars ! I walked away from all 3 with NO seat belts ! I was very lucky ! I will give much credit to the American Steel that they were made of .
If I had a choice of wearing or not wearing a seat belt in my daily drivers , I would still ware them ! These cars today are tin cans !
Anyway I am sorry that you lost your car but they can be replaced one way or the other ! The main thing is everyone made it out OK !
I have a 55 Ford with no belts yet but I do have 2 lap belts for my wife and am and I am installing the this winter when I am doing a lot of interior work ! We both will ware them too ! If another small car hit me I won't be worried due to how well built my car is BUT I really don't want to find out !

Bottom line is there is NO reason not to have and ware a seat belt at all time when driving a car or truck ! Even a cheap $25 lap belt will save you !

Let us all know what you will be building next !
Again , I am glad everyone is OK and the car can be replaced ! Let us know how everyone else is doing .
Always be safe and enjoy your ride !

somewhere I have a pic of a model T crashed in the 20's or 30's , and what is left of the windshield that is sticking into the p***enger compartment is downright scary.

  10. I've brought this up before... Seatbelts save lives....!

This Model A suffered less damage than ****s car... but the results were horrically different!

I remember this one, it was the hood that basically did them in. Seatbelts might have helped on this one for sure, such a sad accident:(

My all knowing congressmen recently p***ed a law stating that a $150 Ticket will be ***esed for driving a car with out seat belts. My questions being, how can I make my seat belt less '50 Ford 4 door sedan retain its cool old school look while adding modern safety? I have some what of a start but am running out of ideas. Also what can I get for a shoulder restraint? Something with a belt retainer thats floor mounted that feeds into a B pillar loop or something. Any Ideas?

You should be "grandfathered". They cannot force you into adding something to your car that did not come new on your car.

Just wait, those sleezy *******s will try to make us all have airbags some day. Just wait. We are the enemy, and those that like anything not green or whatever color is the flavor of the day in Washington.

  20. The law CAN be writ so that you would be ticketed for driving the car without seatbelts. Note that the requirement is not to install seatbelts, rather the requirement is that you must have them fastened while driving.
Sure, a lawyer might get you off, at $300 per hour.

Check late model full size sedans for three-point belts.
We used 95 Honda Accord front belts in the 32 3W Coupe and just duplicated the original install dimensions as closely as possible. Used the leather-covered seats too.
Even retained the adjustable shouder height slider mount too.

In general, the seat belt laws also state that if the car has seat belts, whether factory or aftermarket, they must be used... so if you install 'em make sure everyone uses them.

When you crash an old car with a steel dash and unpadded wheel, you're gonna get hurt - seat belt or not.

However, after reading about the young guy whose girlfriend fell out of a '56 Buick when the door opened during a turn, I have decided to put seat belts in my Plymouth this weekend. Yes they're ugly and ****y, and I've never had any problems with my latches, but I just can't live with that. Maybe you can.

I put rear ones in my 64 belair for kids. I used some bolts and fender washers. drilled hole in floor where I wanted the belts to be attached and then put the fender washer on the bolt, then ran the bolt up thru the floor, and wleded it onto the floor from the bottom to make it a stud to mount the belts.

If you think that this is not a controversial and POLITICALLY charged topic, just read the readers' comments on the above article from the Miami Herald.

This topic needs to be banned from the board under Ryan's "no politics" rule.

IMHO, only an a-hole would ride in any motor vehicle without a seat belt worn properly.

    Right...

And we are back to the namecalling.

You decide what you need to do in your car.

Let others decide what they do in theirs.

Some of my cars have belts, some dont.

I could explain why that is, and I would....

If I thought I owed you an explination.
