how can i get around paying the late fees that my 55 has on it i just got the car and the guy told me it was non op but when i went to the dmv i found out it was not and they want to charg me the late fees is their anyway around this
If there is I haven't found it. I had the same thing happen to me, cost me $589 to register a 54 Ford F100 that sat for 12 years, supposedly on a non-op. It is interesting that up until a couple of years ago you had to renew your non-op (and pay a fee) every year...now you do it once and it's good until you put the car on the road. This might have been one of those changes that the "governator" put into effect.
My '59 has been non op'ed for about ten years and every year I get the reg. in the mail in case I want to take it off n.o. I have never renewed it. When I bought my '55 first place I went was AAA they said it was no longer in the system, once I heard that I was good to go, a little creativity at the DMV and I paid $75 and got new tags... I think if it's still in the computer your screwed though, sorry.
Get title in Arizona. If you apply for CA registration after that, it must have been in your name for a certain period of time, or they charge sales tax, which is 9% of what they think the value is. They won't say what that period of time is. Seriously. After cross-examining the AAA, they thought the period was a year, but wouldn't guarantee me.
I had the same problem about 8 years ago with a 62 Nova. It had about $275 worth of late fee's. A friend told me that DMV would waive late fee's on classic cars and they did. Hopefully this is still true. I found it funny that DMV didn't tell me this on my first visit.
First their cannot be any parking tickets or what on it, as long as you know it was not on any public road fill out a non op on it, and tell them it is part of your collection and you ae restoring it,any car over 25yrs old this will work on, they will try and tell you it ain't so but tell them to look it up in the vehicle code book. also anyone can fill out the non op as long as they have knowalge it was not on any road. i have never paid back fees on any of my old cars and i have regestered well over 100 cars. always use AAA anytime you can it is much eaiser and quicker than the dmv.
Once its in the system/computer now, it stays there indefinitely. They want to get all the old cars off the road through fees and litigation. Heard this from a CHP friend. It used to be 7 years and no activity on a vheicle it was out of the system. But with 30 some odd million cars register here in California thats a lot of money out there waiting to be collected each year.-Weeks
I think he's saying there are late fees for registration that hasn't been paid in years, not parking fees. Maybe there's a waiver for classic cars, sounds too good to be true, but hell it's worth a shot. Talking to idiots at the DMV makes me want to kill someone, AAA is soooo much better. At least they're trying to help you, and usually they even know something, unlike the DMV where you basically have to educate them. Since it's in the system with that VIN, I think you're probably stuck. If it turned out that the VIN on the frame or data plate doesn't match the title(they didn't match on my car when I bought it), then you could throw out the title and register it as a field car. I paid $150 to have a title service help me with the paperwork, ITS charges the same amount. Good luck to you. I'd proably ask about if there is still a classic car exemption at AAA, and if not then just suck it up and pay them. I know a couple guys that got stuck with $500+ worth of parking tickets on cars they sold that the new owner never xferred ownership. This kind of monkey business is very common, you're not the first guy to get burned. Best of luck whatever you do.
Funny you write this..I just left the DMV from a Lien saled 1959 Ford Ranchero I bought...They want $700 in back fees!
I left ca and came to az. The dmv here is almost a pleasure. 61 galaxie,$31.00,2 years. no problem, no BS, wednesday afternoon, no waiting. Really didnt have time to sit down before my number was called. Trailers are permanent for 100. I feel for ya though, I used to go through all kinds of hoops to get the 69VW van registered. Had a bunch crap I needed to put on then take back off after "smog"
Does the car have the black California plates? If your are registering in CA, do everything in your power to retain those plates. DO NOT give them up. Ask them to waive the back fees. If you register the car in AZ, be sure to hold onto the CA black plates AND an old registration card with the vehicle's VIN and palte number. That way if the car does come back to CA, you prove the black plates originally were assigned to that car.
Good luck with lien sales, you ain't gettin off on the back fees on those! totaly different animal than regular reg. "Does the car have the black California plates? You must have proof that the plates were on that vehicle , ie; old reg, pink then it will still be a fight!
If you are talking about AZ. you just need to sign a affidavid (sp?) of non-use or something like that to get it waved.
Actually, it was not that much of a fight, once I was able to articulate what I wanted done. I just did this with my 1967 Impala SS. It was out of the DMV system, I showed my black plates, they made a copy and took my pink slip (with the black plate number) and sent it to Sacramento. 6 weeks later, I received a new pink and registration with the black number. No problems!
Even if the OP never ever returns to let us know what he's actually asking, reading this thread confirms that the government of California deserves everything it's reaping.
My recent experience $87 for reg after a certain date it was $137. Thats cool went in to register it and it was $344, wtf i asked, all abdul could tell me it was $344? So i paid it. They definately have us by the balls. Next time ill go non op
Yep thats cause you had the pink with the plate on it, they cannot argue with that. get the wrong person and it becomes a pissing match. amazing how they can work there and not be required to know the laws.
well i tried evey trick i heard off and non of them worked the dmv lady even told me last year they would have just waived the fees but now that ca is in debt they will not waive any fees. i talked the guy down a lot that i got it frome so i didnt want to bother him with it. i finally swalowed my pride and payed ca, so ill have to sneack into the beach a lot to get my money back
my buick hadn't been reg's since '83 and I only had to pay 120 bucks.. no crazy fees... my only gripe is I have to wait for sac to ok me keeping my black plates... could take a month or so... but ti could take until oct... that's when my temp tag runs out... i am sure it will come faster but... it's supposed to out of the system after 7 years... that's what my lady that handles my DMV crap said.
all above is true!! i,m sure! I never could figure ca. dmv! and never stopped hating that place. AAA is the way! I got stuck for $200 ea. for 2 cars that were way over the , time limit. paid it gladly and left. With me it started 55 years ago with my first hot rod. They asked me where the id number was. It was a model A with chevy in it, and A bone ID is on the old 4 cyl block!!! wotta hassle that was.
If you want the answer go to www.dmv.ca.gov and look it up. It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to find the answer and how complicated people make it for themselves by not doing basic research. I did this with a car I imported from Canada - they told me one story and I called BS, all the way through to the branch supervisor and then pulled out the printed requirements from their website - suddenly everything was through in less than five minutes. Always forearm yourself if you want to do something complicated and you have to do it through the DMV (YOM plates are an example). As others have said, go to AAA whenever you can - they almost always know the rules better and actually do want to help.
You would think the way that the dmv people act that they are paid a commission on any up sell or extra fees they collect! I agree with ya weasel seems some people make it way harder than it really is.
About 8 years ago the Ca DMV waived back fees on a 70 Nova. They would do this if the car was a 'classic' or 'limited production'. This Nova was a SS and I got a book that showed production numbers of the different models and they waived the fees after reviewing my information. Having just purchased a 55 F100 that hadn't been registered in 9 years and the seller promised there were no back fees - it turned out back fees were $500. I explained to the DMV how I registered the Nova in the past and they just argued with me. They promised to check it out and never got back. I did the website search and couldn't find the info. I emailed the question on the website 'contact us' and never got a reply. I made a trip to Mich this summer, took the title with me and registered it there as ,'title only' for $60. The Calif DMV is out for money and will not help. Now that they have raised registration fees, I've heard of many people registering cars out of state or just non op'ing them here in Ca.
