So I just got my 54 running and when I went to shut it off it kept running after I shut off the key. Why does it keep running?? I wired it directly to the battery terminal like I was told to. What should I do?, would it be smart to run a relay?? Im not to keen on wiring so any help would be great thanks.
You need to put a Diode in the wire. It is getting back feed which doesn't allow it to shut off. Go to Radio Shack and get part #176-1661. Install it in the alternator wire with the stripe facing towards the alternator
Why would a diode kill the engine? If the ignition switch cuts power to the coil and points, the car will stop running. I ran the 1 wire from the alt to bat on my 59 Ford 10 years ago and it has always worked fine.
more then likely there was an idiot light in line that acted as the diode. this is a common problem when installing after-market wiring and gauge sets. bvp
I was talking to some guys over at the parts house and they said it might be in my ignition because I am running HEI. They told me to wire it to the accessories side of the ignition switch. Is this true?? How do you wire in the HEI for the guys that are running them?? What exeactly does the diode do?? In the past I ran one wires in a couple 60's fords that I had and never had to run a diode. Thats waht makes me think it is in my ignition instead of the alternator. Thanks for the help guys
A diode only lets power flow one way. It wont let power go from the battery to the alternator, only from the alternator to the battery.
the alt will not keep your car running.the problem is most likely, in the ignition switch. is it a stock switch? if so its probably shot try moving the coil wire to the other acc. lug on the back of the switch. just to see if it works good luck

Make sure the "One Wire" is going straight to the battery and not something that is connected to the ignition side of the switch.
Huh? There's power to the coil when the switch is in the off position. Find out how and problem solved.. But again I'm a dumb ***, so never listen to me.
Thats where my thoughts are leading to. I believe I might have wired the HEI to the wrong terminal on the switch, which I believe that would cause my problem. Back under the dash I go..... Thanks for the help guys
