The 'Holland Galaxie' is up and running good, but is having a minor transmission issue. A little info to start off with -- '63-1/2 Galaxie - freshly rebuilt 390, factory 3x2 setup, shorty cast iron headers, cam, etc. The engine/trans combo was pieced together and a rebuilt C6 ended up in the car. The converter is said to be approx. 2500 stall. The transmission shifts nice and firm, but once you reach 65-70 mph, it will blow transmission fluid out of the vent tube (and onto the exhaust, creating a smoke screen). Jason just checked the level and it is right at the 'Add' mark. Could it possibly have the wrong dipstick and/or tube and be over-full? Are there any other reasons a trans. would blow fluid out of the vent tube? They had the pan off and it was nice and clean inside. I hope someone out there may be of ***istance - if you have questions, just ask. Thanks in advance for any help/advice you may have! Malcolm (couple photos of the car) New wheel/tire/cap combo
could be overful, could have a plugged vent tube full is usually two quarts more than when it first starts to engage fully into gear as you are adding fluid to an empty trans. cars burn up from trans fluid on the exhaust, be careful
I had one do the same thing (in a 63 Ford Galaxie, ironicly) many years ago. We had the engine out rebuilding it, and it turned out that the local leaf cutter bees had plugged the transmission cooler in the radiator, which had been outside the back door of the shop! It might not be the result of bees in your case, but it's possible that your cooler or lines may have an obstruction, since the car has been apart recently. I cooked my transmission before we figured it out.....
Fourbanger is on to something, the only reason I have seen for your problem is over heating. Do you have a lock up converter? Some times to tall of gear ratio will cause this with one of those.
I had a Dodge 727 do it, too. Never determined why, but could have been overfull. The trans had been abused some before I got it. I ended up selling it after only a few months.
The fill tube is also a Breather on that ******. If you put a late style stick with a Rubber plug on the top in it you just forced it to vent out the over flow tube. Also as stated prior, a plugged cooling line will cause it. I've also seen some fluids Foam up causing a false over full condition and will go out the Vent. The Wizzard
Hey Malcom, Are you runnin the old Ford Type "F" fluid in that C6 or the modern cross-over DextronII? Back when these were new, if you put Dextron in a C4 or C6 the ****** usually told you to F.O.A.D.! Good talkin' to ya at the bad bob bbq! S****ey Devils C.C. "Spending A Nation Into Generational Debt Is Not An Act Of Comp***ion!"
"jho", who posted above owns the car. I'm 99% sure he is running Type 'F' trans. fluid in it... Thanks for the extra info! It was good to meet you at the BBQ!
A brief search turned up the capicities for C6's the dry capacity is 7 quarts in the transmission itself. a truck ****** pan can and filter can be added to any car, and it adds an additional 2 quarts. the converter, varies by engine. convertor diameter vs capacity ( quarts ) 10" = 3 quarts 11" = 3.5 quarts 12" = 4 quarts 13" = 5 quarts <!-- google_ad_section_end --> Good to know none the less, gets ya to baseline anyway, or closer to it.
I dont know about your trans, but Mopars need to be checked in a certain gear position, as the converter isn't full of fluid when in park like it is in gear or neutral. And Ford bought liscense for ****** design from Mopar. This is why you run it through gears and then check Mopars in neutral. The level will be different. Most stock dipsticks are identical from the o-ring to the bottom- It's the upper that has a different length/shape to fit different firewalls. - just recheck the factory instructions for which gear to be in. If the level does check out - put a temp gauge on it and confirm the cooling.
My transmission shop owning pal told me to check the fluid in my 67 Barracuda w/273 engine idling and the trans in drive. Gonna need a helper to do it safely. Lately I've been checking the T-400 in the roadster with the trans in park and engine idling. Much better way to it on this car since I'd been checking it with the engine shut down and thought I had the level figured out. I didn't and it turns out the trans was over full....
