Thanks!! I built a plastic model of it over 50 years ago and it still has a soft spot in my heart. I never thought I'd get the chance to take a virtual ride in one.

  3. The last time I attended the EAA show in Oshkosh, the Ford Tri-Motor was in the hanger with 2 of it's engines out for rebuilding. They had a Stinson Tri-Motor of the same era there for passenger flights. It's probably the best money I've evet spent on an airplane ticket. The interior was not as "fancy" as the Ford, and the seat frames were tubular steel with ratan seat & backs. As I recall it held 12 passengers and a crew of 3.

  4. I got a chance tyo see it while it was in Indy...Couldn not make a flight, but I wish I had,
    Great coverage..good pictures..
I got some great shots too...
    Heres just one..

Great stuff! I believe Eddie Rickenbacker, the WWI flying Ace who alos had a car named after him, was one of the founders of Eastern Airlines.

Every one who can should take the opportunity to fly in one of these old girls and warbirds too and see how things really were in the good old days.

When men were men and the sheep were nervous, this is what they flew.

Cool, I love the tri-motors. You know that was the first all metal passenger aircraft? No one believed metal airplanes would catch on at the time but Henry Ford did. And you all thought he was just a visionary with cars!
It was Ford tri's were nicknamed the 'Tin Goose', kinda derogatory like 'Spruce Goose' both kinda ironic as both the 'Goose's' did more for air transport than almost any other aircraft!
You are a lucky person Megan.

  16. Didnt the Germans copy some elements of this for one of their medium bombers? I forget the model and brand, Heinkel, Junkers?

Well if your a Ford man Like me, and it's the late 60s and your crusing Sandusky, Ohio Well there they were, 5 of them and they were the School bus, grocery hauler, mail carrier, you name it. If it could be put on the plane it was fare game, even had a dog on board, and they flew the 5 Islands in Lake Erie. So we purchased our fare and what a ride. Whicker seats, every one has a window seat, and top speed was 90-95. What a ride. So back at the hanger, he said well if you really want a ride come at 9:00 in the morning and ride the mail run, it hits all 5 Islands. HA could hardly sleep, was there at 8:30, ain't gona miss this one. It was just the 2 of us, pilot and me, and he said, you might as well ride up with me, didn't need a second invite. Well we landed on all 5 Islands, Rattle Snake Island was the unforgatable one. We slowed to 45 mph and touched down as soon as there was turf, taxied all the way across the island, he pulling both brake handles to stop the bird, spun her around and opened the window and a sack came upon a stick, he handed it to me and closed the widow and away we went. In half the distance to land, we was air born and I was a kid again. I will go the my grave with that one, and am so glad I took the time to ride the Tin Goose. Its like getting out of a new car and stepping into a 29 Ford for your first ride. True to form the engine gauges were visible through the winow, they were mounted on the 2 engines, the third visible from the cockpit. Gas gage was behind the seat up on the tank. You had to duck your head under the tank to enter the cockpit. It was a sight glass, and you watched the gas float up and down as you were flying. MEMORIES that I will never forget, what a ride. Ice Man, that was way cool!!
T Man, I think you may men the Junkers Ju52, it was a low wing tri motor just like the Tin Goose. Kinda the German DC3. Some were used as medium bombers mainly in the Spanish campaign before WWII kicked off.
They were a development of the Ju13 open cockpit single engine aircraft.

I also flew in it and I was surprised at how fast it accelerated taking of... pushes you back in the seat... more than I expected from some thing built in the late 20's
