I'm replacing the stock motor in my '54 with a 1960 inline 6 cylinder. The block casting won't accept the '54 mounts. Is there an adapter available? I know there is plenty of options if I was putting a V-8 in. Anybody here done this swap? Thanks, Tim
take a steel plate, drill three holes to match the '60 block, then weld the '54 mount to the plate. Or try Tom Langdon. I believe he sells some mounts for this application for around $120.
I believe the proper way is to pull the front plate off the 54 engine and put it on the 60 engine. After that it is a bolt in. It's been about 45 years since I was involve in that particular swap so it may be more involved than that. Snarl's suggestion of welding a plate to the bottom of the front plate on the 60 engine is probably the quickest way to get it done though.
I was refering the the 3-bolt sidemounts that the 58-62 engines have. The '54 doesn't mount under the timing cover, that's the 49-51's that are like that. If you do try mounting the engine under the timing cover on a 52-54 car, then you will also want to add the bellhousing side mounts like the 49-51 cars had in order to help stabilize the engine.
You're right it's the 3 bolt sidemounts that are different. I found tugmaster's thread with the same installation but in his '50 chev. That look's like the way to go. thanks for the reply.
I put a 58 in my 54 a long time ago. made flat plate adapters. bolt them to the block, bolt the old mounts to the adapters. I raised my engine about 1 inch when I did this to get a little more clearance for the truck pan that I used. Also used a shortened water pump. From Patricks, but I think it is simple enough to do yourself, just by pushing on the fan hub a little deeper, maybe. Still wound up putting the radiator in front of the radiator support to get fan clearance. wound up taking the fan off eventually anyway. Frank
