How do you remove the long rods that hold the hood sides to the hood top pieces on a 1936 Ford? (without messing up the paint).

Drill works fine but sometimes a tap handle will get things turning too.

Penetrating oil, vice grips on the cowl end of the rod, someone to help hold the hood, and patience. I didn't have to worry about the paint, as the rod was rusted solid to the hinge rolls, on the right side, they were gone on the hood and I had to make new ones. I lubed the ones in mine with wheel bearing grease when I put it together, hopefully it'll come apart if need be later on.

I used a method similar to that suggested by flynbrian48 but once I had the vice grips on the rod, I lightly tapped the vice grips with a plastic mallet and drove-out the rods. I used stainless rods afterward!
