Not sure if any of the Hamb'rs up north are aware of the first ever land speed race at Loring AF Base in Caribou Maine. Date is set for July 31, August 1 & 2 ... Tech only on the 31st. There is some big iron registered to run. The link to the site; http://www.lta-lsr.com/HOME.htm
Thanks for the heads up ... if it weren't for my wedding anniversary, I'd be there. Come to think of it, if I wanted to instigate divorce proceedings, this might be a fun way to do it!
Ya most of the clubs up here have been keep'n everyone up to speed as there are a couple of Maine cars that will no doubt run... Pontiac Slim
My coupe is a long way from ready and I will run it there next year ... this year I will run the bike ...
May see ya up there.. Listen from what I've been hear'n rooms are get'n hard to come by, may want to keep that in mind... Pontiac Slim
I'm going up with my grandson. I won't be taking my AV8 as I think the little guy would get beat up on a long trip like that. I just want to expose him to all kinds of racing. Had him at Epping for the nostalgia drags last month and he really liked it. If he really digs LSR at Loring, I'll consider taking him to Bonneville when he's a little older. Just have to keep him away from NASCAR.
If you go to website, you can look at discussion thread and see the amount of cars from all over East Coast that say they are coming. Guess a lot of record holders at Maxton also want to hold a new Loring record. They have longer acceleration length at Loring and only 800 above sea level so they will use ECTA rulebook but records will be track specific. Should be fun. We are going to watch, I understand that spectators can park motor homes overnight in parking lot (no services) as the hotel/motel situation is pretty sp**** that far up in Maine.
Ok, I live about 2 miles from where it is taking place. For lodging you have a few options: Crown Park INN about 8 miles away Caribou INN and Convention Center 11 miles away Those are the only 2 larger hotels, there is allso Russels, which is small, about 10 Miles away Right on the base, less than a mile from the runway there is the Loring INN. Not sure if it is still open or what the deal is, best bet on the one is to call the Limestone Country club and they could fill you inn. They also have town houses that may be able to be rented out for the weekend 207-328-7277 is the number to the golf course In Presque Isle, about 22 miles away there is The Northeastland, Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center, Budget Traveler and a brand new Hampton Inn. I am not sure if the Hampton Inn will be open then or not, construction is coming to a end on it soon, or appears that way anyways. The closest town to the runway is Limestone. Very small, nothing there. Gas and soda is about it, no places to eat, unless you count hot dogs (which are red BTW. dont freak out when you see red hot dogs, they are good LOL) out of a steamer. Caribou is your best bet. Not big but has several resturants, 2 parts stores, half a doz. gas stations etc. Presque Isle, which I mentioned earlier has a Wal Mart, a small mall, 4 parts stores, a lot more stuff there. If anyone needs anything when they get up here let me know. I dont live far away and would be glad to help anyway I can. One thing you may want to check out is Spud Speedway. It is on the Thompson Rd. You p*** it leaving the base. It is a 1/3 mile asphalt oval. We race on Sundays. It isnt a fancy place by any means but the racing usually pretty good, I race there. Any questions just holler, I will do my best to answer them
At Loring Air force base: Randy Holbrook's world record in the 1350 production cl*** is 205.658. The old record at Bonneville was 205.2. Scott Guthrie Team broke its own world record of 250 by more than 10 miles an hour. At 11:47 am, Sunday, August 2nd, Scott Guthrie was asked this question: "What do you think of the venue"? He replied " We may very well skip Bonneville for the Loring Air force Base".
Come on fellas, please don't start claiming new world records unless you get the SCTA to go to Loring AFB and certify the vehicles, co**** and times. If you want to create your own Loring LSR records, like Maxton does, fine, just don't go down a road that will only lead you to a cliff. On the positive side, congradulations on pulling your project together. I wish you all nothing but continued success.
Jessechop, I went to Limestone High and graduated in "73", and picked potatoes in the fall. I loved it there even with the long winters. It seemed the winter was as long as the other three seasons combined. As far as the LSR's go, watch out for the Moose, Mooses, Meese, and other critters.
I used to live up there in Caribou back in 95. It was pretty dead at the time except for the potato wrestling. Its cool to see stuff like this happens up there.
Hey Jessechop, I 'm out of Mapleton......I got a ton of pics of your A truck when it was over at Willettes garage in Presque Isle.....Very cool ride you have!....John

The hard work and sacrifices made by the members of ECTA and LTA deserve our most sincere respect. In providing yet one more venue to those of us in search of speed, they have created real opportunity. All communities have naysayers, village explainers, and small minds and land speed racing is no exception. For two days, in remote Maine, people had fun, made new friends, went fast and broke down many barriers. Again to those who have made it possible and opened a door to the future a heartfelt thank you from a few of us who went fast and made history. <!-- / message -->
Scott Guthrie's record is for the fastest sit on motorcycle in the world ... not SCTA / not LTA / not AMA / not ECTA ... it was timed with certified equipment on a closed course with multiple witnesses ... I witnessed the run and saw the speed print out on the equipment ... 265 mph ... the previous record was 260.2 and he beat that earlier with a 260.9 ...
