1929 closed cab to rpu

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1929, Jul 9, 2009.

  1. I am glad this thread started out with a negative reaction (to which I agree). Usually the first post is how to do it and then nobody will come in and say it is a bad idea. Go to a large street rod event and you will probably find one that had been converted this way. I think you will share my opinion that the result (unless you spend a ton of money) is less than you would like to see.

1929 is without a doubt the coolest of the early Ford Pickups, do not cut the top off or chop it. If you want to ruin something go find a similar year Chevy, those are **** anyway.

Nothing wrong with chopping it but like a lot of guys including myself have said, for the money and time you would spend to make it look right with the top cut off you could easily sell what you have and find a real deal RPU. There are TONS of guys out there that are looking for a nice closed cab pickup you'd have no trouble selling yours.

Hey, whatever you do, no matter what direction you go... do it well and that's it. I think that's the key to the H.A.M.B.

After seeing those doors all I can say is DON'T DO IT!!!. '29 phone booths are cool. One of the best looking early pickups ever made. Don't **** it up, trade for a RPU.

Please don't cut it up. 99.9% of closed cars/trucks that have the roof cut off turn out looking like ****. Especially Fords, roadsters and closed cars/trucks look nothing alike and have completely different proportions.

The phone booth cab is what makes them so damn cool!

  12. I just think that was such a beautiful truck that it gains it from its height. Chopping it should be a sin.

Ha!! Your just jealous because Chevy's have

    BIGGER WOOD!!!

I vote no chop on it. Leave the cab stock, shorten the bed a bit, a nice raked stance(not rat-rod low) drop in a nice flatty and drive the wheels off it. If the rest of the cab looks like those doors, screw painting it.

If you dont want to buy a Brookville RPU, talk to Norbyrattler from
Last Refuge Hot Rod Parts in CO, he does a reasonable RPU at a budget price.

    Worth a look!

Cutting the one you have makes no sense really.

  15. Or do a search and NOT deal with Norbert!

Cowls are a dime a dozen, Have Killer make you the other parts.

  16. Thats it, booking my ticket to the US to kick your *** for just thinking it.

Chop it, channel it, step the rear of the frame, drop the front axle, reverse the springs . . . it will look *****en. Drop it down to where you are high-centering on speedbumps and you've overdone it.

This board is great for opinions (I ask for them all the time), but as most members tend to favor 40s - early 60s traditional build styles, so you won't find a lot of people loving ground-s****ing, heavily z'd framed or bagged model As here.

But when it comes down to it, it is your truck and your time and money. Do what makes you happiest. As someone previously mentioned, whatever you do, just make sure you do it very well and your truck will rock.

  19. Seriously for what you could sell that for you could get a RPU body and have coinage left over for quite a bit of other stuff if you seriously want a RPU.
    Doc.

  20. Yup, nice doors can fetch $400 a piece.

Here are a couple pix of '29 trucks that are chopped and dropped to the dirt. Honestly, the proportions generally just dont look quite right to my eye.

There is HAMBer from Australia or New Zealand who had a beautiful hot rod truck with a banger, mild chop and hot rod rake and it was off-the-charts *****en. It was for sale here on the HAMB a little while back, but I wasn't able to find it to steal pictures - maybe someone else can post them?

Screw that, cut the top off glue some spider webs to it (real ones) Paint some rust and skeletons all over it, then buy all NEW suspension parts and throw them in a lake so you can build a "traditional" Rat Rod!

i was thinking the same thing.... hey Jason, this is my brother so whatever he decides to do. i'll make sure that it comes out right.

it's a very nice truck. the doors look like they've been stored away since 1929. that's how clean they are. the rest truck has been stored out doors but no rust eaten thru. plain surface rust.
