My 19 year old daughter bought a 64 Galaxie 500 that has sat for 6+ years, checked all fluids, changed the points/condenser and added a battery and cranked it with the coil wire off for about 1 minute on and off, attached the coil wire and it fired, had some lifter noise and rough running but after a few minutes and some Sea Foam down the carb it runs decent......now at first start up there is no smoke but after a few minutes when it warms up it starts smoking at idle and acceleration,I have check the oil return holes under the valve cover and there open...I have NOT changed the oil yet or added any snake oil to the system, could the rings be hanging up from sitting? should I change the oil and drive it for a while and see if it clears up or is there a possibility the motor is just worn?..any and all ideas or info is welcome and thanks

A compression and leakdown test will probably tell the tale. I could be ring/cylinder wear, guides, seals.

Start with the easy things first like a compression test. The rings maybe gummed up but I just started a 390 up after 10 years of siting and it runs a treat. Fitted a new fuel pump and did a oil change and its fine.....good luck!

try an oil change you cant tell whats in that old stuff, but as already was said
a compression check and leak down test should be done.

i just reawakened a 65 352 after a 33 year sleep. i rebuilt the carb, put in a new high volume oil pump, points, coil, condenser and plugs. it smoked a bit on initial start up but after i put some miles on it it stopped.

  7. Any idea how many miles on the engine? If it might be the original, what does the odometer read?

There are all kinds of tales about a quart of trans fluid for approx 50 miles but I always liked Schaler Rislone to loosen up lifters & thin down the oil with extra detergents. Kind of old technology now these days but it's hard to break ancient habits.

To me 6 years is a short timespan. Change the oil.

The Rislone is an old tried and true method, also adding Marvel Mystery Oil is another, drive it and change to a good 10W30 for detergent to help clean it out further and use a Motorcraft filter not a POS Fram.

I may very well run smokey for a while, then one day barf up a giant hairball and stop smoking. Had an old Datsun junk yard motor do that. Smoked like Jackie Gleason for about three weeks, then *BLOOF*. Compression came back and the smoke stopped. Good luck.

Like all unknowns its a crap shoot. Without previous history and mileage you can only guess. It never hurts to soak the cylinders with some reslone/marvel. Oil and filter change with reslone in the oil and drive it. Results are what they are after a few hundred miles.

I'll drink to that. It's too early to panic yet.

This doesn't look like much after it sat for 20 some years but you can't tell a book by it's cover. When I first got it running it would smoke. I used some Marvel Mystery oil this time but I have used Rislone in the past with success. Starting it up in the garage for a few minutes now and then really didn't change much but once it was on the road and it got exercised the rings did free up and there is no trace of smoke now.

No one responding to this post can tell you if your engine still has any life left in it. I say give it an honest shot at surprising you.
