Hi All I have a chance to buy a 4 speed off a ford flat head 8 year unknown, To replace my 49 three speed flat head 8. Will this bolt rite up, will drive shaft be correct length. Thanks
If it's a straight-cut gear 4-speed, p***. They are a ***** to drive, gears grinding and whining like a siren, and poor gear ratios too. Stick with the 3 speed.
if its a car four speed, then it's a 3 speed with a selonoid operated overdrive, not a 4 speed. basically it doesn't sound like either way (car or truck 4spd) is what you want, a true four speed.
The 49-50-51 ect overdrive transmission is as good as they come and is a bolt in. The drive shaft "May " have to be shortened but thats minor situation. If a actual car 4-5 speed is wanted it will be necessary to use an adapter that is available and modify the driveshaft. I personaly have a 52 flatty with overdrive and it works just fime and great on the hiway.
The conversion for the T5 transmisssion is well worth it. It costs a few bucks, but mine has been in for ten years and works great. Find one with short tail.
Well, we need more information first off. The 4sp needs to be ID'd and if it is a good one you will want to buy the adaptor or hogshead that it was bolted up to. Drive shaft will likely have to be worked on but that is no biggie. Check out the tech threads for this conversion and you will find a lot of good stuff but first off you have to ID the ******. Good luck and if it isn't an old truck 4 speed you might have a good deal.
Since it's on an F1 it should already have the split bell/hogshead that it needs. But I agree with the others on all points. There is one other option out there: the 4 spd truck trans that is synchro'd and came in F6's behind the 254 six. But it still only gives you 1:1 output. The OD would be better.
The S10 T5 is the best option, IMO. But if you go with being a double clutching fool like me, then that 4 speed should work. It's just a matter of finding the right rear ratio. It will probably say something like 59T on it.
