I have a 57 F100, the VIN plate is on the driver's door pillar, but it is held on with four phillips head screws. I've never seen a car with a vin plate screwed on like that. Is this normal? The cab has been painted at one time, maybe a P/O pulled it off to paint the cab.
The vin should be in the glove box... That's were it was on my '57 F750, my '58 F100, my '59 F650, and my '60 F100...
I'm not a '57 owner, but I've had 8 or 9 '56s, and there all in the same spot, held in the same way, so I'd guess yours is factory. Makes for easy cab swapping.
It's in the glove box on my 58, but it is a different size. In the 58, it's about 3.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall with one rivet on each side. In the 57 it's like 6 wide and 2 inches tall with a screw at each corner.
I've had a few 57's that were screwed on like yours, most seem to have it on the glove box though. You can also find the VIN on top of the RH front frame rail, between the firewall and axle.
Does the inside of your glovebox door look like it had a tag riveted to it? That's where it's supposed to be. Does the tag# match the VIN that is stamped into the top of the right hand framerail, just in front of the firewall? If not, you may have a problem.
No, the glove box has no holes in it. I haven't gotten to the frame rail yet, though the # matches the ***le, and matches that of a 57 F100.
Ya know...Maybe they changed it part way through the year? Could be early in the year they put them where yours are, and then they changed it and the other 3 years followed? Could be maybe just the first few months they did that. It's pretty common for manufacturers to make little changes like that, even more common on first year body styles. What month was yours built it? maybe if we get some dates together we could see if my theory holds water.
1957's started with the it mounted on the door jam like the 1956s Eventually they switched over to the glovebox. On early 1957's the vin plates themselves were different than the later years.
My truck 58 f100 sat in the driveway 4 years with no non op....it was off californias DMV records.so when i registered the truck again they made me come on down for an inspection and verify the vin. #. Its in the glove box, and yah, who cant swap the glovebox door? kinda shady huh!
Back in the day the cab and other body parts were considered replaceable parts. The only number that really matters is the one on the frame.
My 57 F100 also has it on the door jam with the same 4 phillips screws on it. I also owned a 57 F500 and that was on the glove box door. I also believe that it was a transisional thing by moving it to the glove box door part way through the model year. Michael
Does anyone have any experience with any of the following remanufactured VIN plate vendors: http://www.martiauto.com/tags.cfm http://www.datatags.com/ https://midfifty.com/images/2009_Midfifty_Catalog.pdf - page 36
I have seen reference to data tags put on the back edge of drivers door. My '57 600 had the doors replaced, so no tag, but the door pillar has the screw/rivet holes with no evidence of use.,,,,Yes, the frame # is on the ***le.
