Here some cool old 8mm video from Minnesota and Iowa Dirt tracks in the early 60's. Dad built the #14 with the signature ******* bunny and can be seen at 12 seconds in the cool checkered shirt, and at 40 seconds changing tires. Dad wrote and performed this ballad for his good friend and driver Jim. It tells the story.... Enjoy
That's the coolest **** I've ever seen. My dad used to race these old cars, but all we have is pictures. The video is awesome! Great old song too. Thanks, Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
Man that was bad *** and when times were less complicated !! Did any of you cats catch how he hole sawed the rear of the body ?? Racers were always good thinkers. I gotta get me one of those hats >>>>.
Three years ago I heard through the g****vine that a local guy had a model A body side from the one of the 14 cars hanging on his garage wall. I got it and gave it to my Dad for Fathers Day for garage art.
I think there is some truth to that. It does appear the horsepower was outpacing the rest of the technology!
Damn, those old timers were flat gettin' it. You never expect race cars from 40 years ago to be that fast. The more things change, the more they stay the same. How big was that place? Three quarters of a mile? Full Mile? Where is it? Do you know the name of the track? Anything left there now? We used to have a mile up at the MO state fair grounds in Sedalia, but they closed it down. Now they run on a half mile in the infield, and show cattle and stuff in new buildings built on the old mile. Sad to see it go, I always wanted to run on the big track, but I missed it by a couple of years.
The track record at our local dirt track has been the same since 1981. Newer cars and the latest technology has not broken the fast time. Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
To be fair, that is sometimes more due to rule changes than some lack with the current technology. I know our lap times constantly trended downward around here as time went on, mostly because our rulebook was constantly getting thinner, and the tech inspectors were constantly getting less concerned with enforcing what few rules we had left. Aluminum blocks were against the rules, but that didn't stop several cars from showing up with black painted engines that progressively became more aluminum-colored as the night went on the paint chipped off. It's hard for a car not to get faster when you peel 100 LBS off of it. Don't get me wrong, I love those cars. FAST fast. As the saying goes, they are "Bad Fast". Expensive, but very fast, and a hoot to drive.
That's cool!! Reminds me of when I was a kid watching my Dad. This was on of his cars And one with his tow rig He told me those were the good years. You could build a car on a budget and compete. He raced until 1974. Then he started building hot rods.... Jeff
