Here's some funny shit.....I don't care what anybody says.I was out in the shop a few moments ago plugging a couple of holes in in the clove box door of my 39.I went through all the precautions to make sure i did not burn the new carpet i just installed. Now at this point i start smelling something burning, the first thing i look at is my new carpet... go figure!! So i commence back to finishing my little plug job and the next thing i know is my ass is on fire!!!.It seems a spark had bounce over my shoulder and landed on the flap over my back pocket.Burnt all the way to my drawls, but what the hell the carpet is fine

Yeah, sure it was a welding spark. Cut back on the cheap burritos man, you're over the line.

How about laying on your side welding above your head and have a molten blob bounce down your ear canal?
I can breath out my ear now!!! comes in handy tho ;)

i have been on fire from welding to many times to count, but the best was when i caught my undershirt on fire, i had coveralls on, a shirt on and it was my dam undershirt that started burning, having a big dog ball burn down through the top of your boot and ending up between your toes is no fun either.

Here's a pic of what my butt was the closest to while burning.

  7. Not welding but using a fire wrench a good many years ago and cutting a piece of metal to make a bracket a piece of slag fell on top of my right canvas tennis shoe and I still have a big scar on top of my foot,,,

Funny now but trying to get a shoe that is on fire and a sock that has melted to the top of your foot off while dancing on the other made a couple of my friends damn near have heart attacks laughing,,, HRP

Yea, the dog ball between the toes is the worst. I always somehow forget to take my watch off and end up with a crystal full of buckshot. One time, it was my "good" watch, (a present from my wife) so I went out and bought another one, thinking I would be slick, and she wouldn't know. Didn't matter, she found the fucked up one anyway, and after I told her the story, laughed like hell. Mig welding is also pretty hard on your favorite T shirts...

I have a nasty scar on my leg from setting my Levi's on fire while welding, hmmm don't see too much humor in it! Least you'll heal, carpet won't.
Don't tell OSHA but I've been burned so much from slag getting thru to places you can't get to (down hightop lace up workboots, down a shirt even with leathers on) that I don't even try anymore. My welding gear is a pair of shorts and sandels. Really.

  10. Amen to that! If you can still hear while it's happening, sounds like rice crispies.

Welding a trunk floor in and caught a pile of trash sitting under the car on fire. A sure sign the project had been sitting too long. tnrotter

  13. The bodyshop I used to work for made us wear white shirts and grey trousers that they supplied. in the winter I always wore a cotton thermal undershirt as it was cold in the shop. I was welding in a Subaru frame rail on my back and smelled something burning. I lifted the helmet and found my whole chest was on fire. You have never seen a guy roll out from underneath a vehicle so fast in your life while beating out the fire with my welding glove covered hands. it burned a 8 inch hole in the shirt (darned blended polyester shirts) and browned out the thermal undershirt, but luckily no burns. We went back to overalls shortly thereafter......

I was having a tough day while working with my son and brother in law a few months ago, they thought I was throwing a fit when I kicked my shoe off and across the parking lot, but actually, by the time I had noticed it, my shoe was a flaming inferno with about a foot tall flame....

Once they figuresd out what had happened, they were TRYING not to laugh at me, but sometimes laughing just happens... :D

I have had plenty of cannon balls in my shoes, they suck... but, at least I have never set my balls on fire......

It's the frayed hems on the bottom of my old jeans that I always catch on fire while welding. Once I was grinding on the frame of my old 56 and caught the crotch of my coveralls on fire.....it was rather exciting. Don't wear coveralls commando, even if it's over 100F outside.

I hired a young guy to do some cleanup and light welding around the shop a few yrs. back - He showed up with frayed bell bottoms on and I told him to go home and change - but he said that he's been welding for a few yrs and never had any problem - Gave him a little sit down mig job and not 2 min later I hear this yell, look up and see this kid dancing around, jumping up and down, yelling and screaming - both his pant legs were blazing and he had caught his crotch on fire also and was slapping his crotch with his helmet - he just burnt some leg hair and had some smoldering underwear, but was O.K. - He cussed at me and said that it's to dangerous and he quits.

  19. I used to work at with an older guy who was on a large weld line. He had a couple pair of tatty uniforms. One night I noticed his pant leg was on fire. It wasn't a small fire either. I yelled out to him, only then did he put it out. He sais he felt it but thought it was just his ciatic nerve acting up. I've never had that condition, but if it feels like a leg is on fire, lets hope none of us get it.

I was helping a buddy change the rear shocks on a '69 GTO.
I finally had to resort to a cutting torch to get the one bolt out.
So I'm lying on the floor on my left side with the toch in my right hand working over head.
There was a flash and shower of sparks, so I did a quick half roll awa y from the car.
When I rolled back I put the back of my upper arm right down on a large ball of red hot slag.
to this day I still hate working on that car.

Angle grinder spray the most often. Bench grinder, gas wrench, stick, mig, all the above. Frays, hems, pockets, teeshirts, cotton work gloves, etc, etc. Dingleberries in anywhere they can find and down as far as they can drop, including inside my standard leather pull-on (no laces thank you) boots that I always hang my cuffs (don't roll'em either) over.

But my continuing favorite seems to be the damn rags I never remember to remove from my pockets. :(

  23. I had a couple of memorable tales. Once I was cutting out something on a junk car (upside down of course) and a ball of slag bounces and lands in my beard under my chin. It hurt instantly, but I couldn't extricate myself for a few long seconds. I now have a goatee and the scar shows.

Another time I was welding on a stock car while wearing frayed Levis cords. The pant leg went up and I really didn't notice since I had boots on. I did feel the heat when it got mid-calf on me. I stuck my whole foot into the quench bucket we always had on hand.

Never caught my ass on fire but I was doing some overhead welding lying on my back under a car one time. A very large BB fell down and went through my cotton button up shirt lapel and started rolling around on my chest and finally came to rest on my left nipple. I was on a roll and didnt want to stop welding. Finally had to stop cause it just wouldn't go out! Had a scar for a while.

    Heh.
mig welding in dickies in the seated position...well, I figured out why they call them that. the right amount of heat in the right spot, and that's what You're lookin at. it's also an interesting injury to explain to the wife. "no, honey, honestly...I was welding and some slag jumped into my lap...no, I haven't been going to the strip club.

I was working in an elevated confined space doing some air gouging. Some of the molten metal went behind me and got lodged between my ass and a piece of "fire retartdant" wood I was sitting on. That one hurt.
I was welding with some 6010's when I blew through the root. The resulting ball of death got lodged between the back of my neck and my collar.
The list goes on and on...

Still have a scar on my foot from '63 in auto shop class. Cutting the exhaust pipe off my '50 Chevy and a big slag ball fell into my shoe and melted through my sock and a quarter inch into my foot. Just cussed and stepped into a bucket of water to cool it off.:p
