With the exception of the San Luis Obispo DMV. Every DMV i've ever been to was a bunch of F'in idoits. I had to keep going back and trying to get a different person because the one I kept getting, fought me on the rules of the Number/Letter, sequence. ***** kept telling me I had a truck plate. I told em in '51 the plate said "TRK" on it if it was for a truck. Then the next person told me I could not register an old plate. Then the next person told me I couldn't register a 6 digit plate. I had to fill out some paperwork byp***ing the dumb ***es at the local DMV going directly through sacramento.
Unless this new law educates the idiots at the DMV about older plates.....I don't see any difference. We can already register clean, old plates. The people are the problem.

  2. no overlap, '56 plates went to '62 and in '63 black background came in.

commercial plates before '56 said "com", "be" or "pc" in horizontal letters.

and dmvs are lame it's up to you to know the system and if you can't get the right answer go to another dmv.

  3. you ALWAYS have to wait for sacramento on new yom registration. they're the final ok, even after all the paperwork and verifying are done at the local dmv.

  4. they can't take your property........even if their not out of the system to use. you HAVE to show them the plates so that can verify it per the application. the application (the bottom section) asks them to check and write in the numbers/letters, check the type of metal (steel, aluminum), measure the plate size, write in the condition of the plates and write in how many plates you have. they're not going to take your word for all the info (would you?). also they have to go through ALL the other type of plates (motorcycle, commercial, car, personalized....) one by one on the computer looking to make sure your numbers don't show up. go to another dmv if you have a problem with one.

  5. he cannot keep the plates if they're registered to it, their just normal plates (not his property). that's like someone with a 2005 toyota wanting to keep thier regular plates. if you let him keep them you will ALWAYS be a part of the yom program and have to get the '56 with a '59 sticker and pay more every year for registration. you can not use the '63 plates on that truck again unless it's those particular ones. i would tell him that it's part of the deal or walk (unless your getting a smoking deal and are ok with white plates or the yom). yes you can register white white plates and return with yom at any time.

Here in Nevaqda the plates are issued to an individual NOT the vehicle but in Caqlifornia they are registered to the vehicle NOT the individual unless they are vanity plates. This guy is just being a ****head and if he really wants to sell the car he will let the plates go with it. If he can't do that, then walk away. You can't even begin to imagine what a can of worms this could turn into.

the guy keeping the plates is most likely not going to be able to use them on a different car since they are in the system on a currently registered vehicle. even when you put it in your name with your new plates. they don't just immediately come available for use. I am 95% certain this will be the case. in a nutshell you can't transfer a plate from one registered vehicle to another (except for personalized)

as for problems with registering, you just tell them the plates are missing and you'd like to get new ones when you are at the DMV transfering the ***le. last time I got new plates for a car it ws like 7 bucks though I'm sure ut has gone way up since then. you will leave the DMV with your new plates and stickers ***uming there are no other problems.

I'd be leary of why he wants to keep them. I'd also be sure to check the vin number and make sure the ***le goes with the car.

to me anyways a pre 63 car with black and yellows on it ads a certain value to a car as it shows it has been continuosly registered since 63.

Well, I may have hit the "Holy Grail" of DMV workers yesterday. Got my '59, sans black plates. Took the ***le to DMV to register and get some new plates. Told the lady that the previous owner decided to keep the plates, so I need new ones. She looked on the computor for a quick second and said "What did he keep the plates for? It's not like they are specialty plates or anything...they should have stayed with the car" I said- Well, they were old plates, he just wanted to keep them. She replies "It's not like they were Year of Manufacter plates or something...and even then, he'de have to put them on another '59 to use them."
I'm sure my mouth dropped open.......
I'm like "You know what the Year of Manufacture plates are?" She says "Oh yea, on an old car like you have, you can register the same plate they used back in '59 on it...of course with yours, you'll need a '56 plate with a '59 registration sticker.....they can be found though" and with that she reaches into a file next to her desk and hands me the YOM form. "Bring this back with you if you find some."
    Sweeeeeeet........:D

The SLO DMV is pretty cool. 99% of the time i go there, its in and out with out any issues.(even with old plates) now the santa maria DMV (30 miles away) 99% of the time i am there hours and leave feeling like a battered wife. like, you know better than to go back, but you don't know what else to do. Maybe someone should start a DMV abuse hotline.

Well I got the release from the PO on my YOM plates to register in my name. Was in and out of the Taft dmv in 10 minutes.

Good luck with your ventures there, Lotus.

Not entirely true - I got my black plates (1963) returned from my '40 coupe when I changed to a vanity plate - at the Westminster DMV. I still have the black plates to prove it

The Pasadena CA office seems to be pretty good for YOM when I have been there. THE LESS SAID, THE BETTER, don't engage them in discussions on how you got the plates, restorations, etc. It just causes them to ask more questions and make up more rules.

  19. I waltzed in to my local DMV, handed them the NOS 1956 plates, still in the brown envelope signed by then-Governator Edmund G "Pat" Brown, and a red (fake, but I didn't tell them that) reflective 1957 sticker, and i was on my way in 1/2 an hour.. I just did the same with a set of "restored" (hammer and dolly and close to correct lite blue and white paint) 1926 Ca plates for the T Sedan.. again, no trouble, just $$$$....

DMV people, hmm got to just love them. It just depends how familiar the person who is doing the paper work. Some just don't get it and make a big production out of it. I know we have been able to run YOM plates for awhile here. But still you run into people and DMV agency here that just can't figure out. I had to get my paper work from my 49 Ford, and take it to them and show the girl it can be done, and the law says so. She still wanted to issue collector plates(ugh?). Finally after two hours of B.S. she simple asked the girl next to here, and pow she figured it out after being told how. Then I got a nasty letter in the mail, because she didn't charge me some other fees. Then was told if I didn't pay them, they would not release my ***le to The 59 Stationwagon. Love your local DMV !
