Preparing to install new tank in my '59 Chevy. I know they come 'coated' but should anything else be done to protect it? Should it be painted? or something else?

I always spray undercoat on the tops. After replacing a few for other people I have seen rust start on the top. I figure it cant hurt.
The other places I have seen the leak is under the straps.

I was just planning on hitting it with some "undercoating" out of a spray can. You can pick them up at the auto parts store. Figured it is better safe than sorry you know.

Paint it. Then undercoat it if you want to. Paint sticks better and will protect the metal better. I think they look nice flat black but silver wouldn't be bad, either, especially if you're going to shoot spray tar over that.

i put a new one in my off topic 66 mustang and clear coated it so it still looked galvanized ! the old one had started to oxidize due to the floor sweating when it got humid !
