doesn't matter what the fuel cost if you cant get into the tank...please help me???

i bought a car that the fuel door has been removed and the filler neck is now in the trunk. it goes like this. starting in the trunk.....

    1. the right rear of trunk has a non vented cap with a, what looks like, steel tube running down under the car, through the trunk floor.

    2. then it turns toward the center, parallel to the bumper. ending near the center behind the tag area.

3.it then goes into a 4" long piece of rubber hose.

    4. the hose connects to a 90 degree elbow. a "L" if you will. made out of steel i think. this has a vent that is pointed down?!?!

    5. on the other side....now going away from the tag area, towards the tank, starts another 4" piece of rubber hose that connects to the tank........follow me??

since step #4 has the vent pointing down(it also has a hose off of it, but that seems ok), it fills with fuel every time i put gas in it and the gas pump shuts off. every 2-5 seconds!! making a fill up take 3 1/2 hours i would guess. i always give at $5 and go for a quick trip?? ****s!

now my question..any ideas to cure this? i want to either change this set up or buy new "L" piece...but where? not interested in cutting off the vent tube and re welding it. not comfortable enough with a welder for that.
i can not flip it over. wont fit. the vent coming off is welded at a angle, that if flipped, would hit the rear of the car. ALOT!! wouldn't fit. trust me, i tried.

its all custom stuff. factory stuff wont work. however, the tank is GM from 78 buick.

sorry for the long post. any thing would sure help me!!! thanks,
    Chris

Is your car still mounted on the original ch***is? If so, Ditch that GM stuff and build some brackets to mount a repop '65-67 Mustang tank under the trunk floor. The hole for the filler neck would move to the rear center of the trunk. Then most any Ford filler neck could be vented and adapted to the tank. Cheap, simple, and a straight shot for filling. Anyhow, that's my 2c worth.

Sounds like a rollover valve on the end so any fuel in it and it shuts off venting. Pull it off.

So, this is a GM tank with the fuel fill in the center pointing to the rear with yards of relatively level tubing snaking around and vented wrong? The first thing I'd do is chuck the entire thing, tank, tubing, no fuel fill door and all, get a fuel filler door I like that flows with the body lines, cut a hole, mount the Mustang tank as per the above post, and forget about opening the trunk and filling inside the car, unless you like gas fumes in the car.

I guess, without seeing the installation, you really need to find a more direct route from the filler neck to the tank. Is there any way to remove the filler neck and tubing and start over with a new design, that will remove the turns that are causing the fuel to back up and cause slow filling?

Sounds like a hell of a rig to me. I would first cut all the tubing off and leave enough to put a 5/16 rubber line on it and run to the back of the car in the bumper area. This should be fast and easy then see if it helps. If not do the mustang tank as suggested in the above post.

I just bought a 17 gallon cell that *should* replace my stock one, and have a filler in the right general area. I did have to lose the spare tire well. but my spare didn't fit in it, so...
instead of trying to re engineer someone else's abortion, start fresh. you'll be glad you did.

these are the pics....kind of weird angles. some from under "shooting forward" and some "facing the rear". either way if you can see the fuel tank... you be able to figure out the angle where its filler hose enters along with the vent hose that points down. where the problem lies!!

reminder of pattern or flow of fuel filler**only 2 turns** is that alot??
    1. enters in trunk at right rear.
    2. down to right rear of car where it turns (1st turn) one time towards the center of car
    3. at center of car near the tag box, it has a 90 degree turn(2nd turn) towards the front of car. made out of steel.
    4. ending at fuel tank entry

all looks like 3" hose.....vent is a 5/8" fuel line leading to on top of rear end housing.

problem is, i think anyway, is the 5/8" vent is coming off of the "90 degree elbow" facing the ground. as soon as gas hits it...it fills up and we have a vapor lock!!

    thanks again for everyones help!!!

I think I would try to bring it up through the trunk right where it goes into the tank,or just replace the whole set-up.

I'd take all that **** off and redo it. Like 53sled said, better to redo it yourself than try to fix someone elses abortion....

  15. A lot of early Broncos have that same problem right from the factory. With some vehicles you can get them to fill better by merely turning the gas pump handle to a different angle while filling...I've got one that stops the pump every couple seconds unless the handle is set at a 10 o'clock position.

    so....my options..

    1. change entire tank? even though mine is fine except the venting problem?

    2. redo all the FILLER parts? where is a good place to get all the stuff to do that? is there a place that sells 90 degree and rubber fuel line in 3"(i think) hose and other odds and in's?

    3. redo it with it coming straight out, behind the license plate? my question would be doesnt the "inlet" have to be higher then the tank?? if so, it would be very close to the same level, at best!

Sorry everyone to keep asking questions. i am new to this fuel filler stuff. most my knowledge(what there is of it), comes from stock cars. much easier. just put fuel in top of cell....go racin!

i want it to be done right, cheap, and fast! however, i am told i can only pick two at a time!?!

flip the elbows over so the vent tube is on the top? not sure if it'll fix it, but it might help.

Then when you get time, redo the whole thing with a different tank that has the filler on the end, instead of the back, and put a filler door on it or at least a hole thru the fender so the filler is outside the car.

Just a quick answer to the fuel fill hose question. Gates rubber has various sizes of formed fuel fill hose, in both 45 degree, and 90 degree bends. If that fails, look at the performance marine suppliers.
