When I got my 38 coupe it didnt come with a gas tank. I would like to put a new one in in the same location as a sedan, in the rear under the trunk. Can I do this? Thanks

I actually put my coupe body on a sedan frame. I tried to leave the straps for the gas tank but because the spare is below the main floor in the trunk, I had to eliminate the straps. I think a gas tank below the trunk floor will be too low (and in plain view). You might just dummy one up and see what you think.
Maybe you could find a small tank that would fit in the spare tire area.

Why would you not put the tank in the original location?

When I bought it, the car had new pans front to back, and there wasnt a fuel tank with it, or the wood mounts it sits on. Previous owner welded up the original hole and installed a sedan fender with the fuel tank hole. Body work is done. He said he once had a convertible and it was mounted in the rear and that was his plans. So, if a sedan tank would work, it would be easier for me to do that. Thanks

I have a Superior gl*** 'vert, check with them if you want, they may lead you to a tank mfg, Mine sits between the frame rails in the rear. I used a Ford Vic fuel tank tube as a filler neck. Tank is poly about 14 gals looks like a elongated donut with a hole in it, it's their way of baffling with out interior baffles.

...buildin a 37 coupe now, I'm using a "Tanks" 35-6 Plymouth poly tank under the trunk floor, fills on the top on the driver's side,...my filler neck will come thru trunk floor and out on the quarter panel just above the stock tailite using a grommet for a 67-8 Chevy pickup.
It hangs down no lower than the orig. rear leaf springs which is not that low, about 2-3 inches higher than the bottom of the rearend center section. If your car is really low this may not work.
...send your email & I'll send pics.

I had a 38 chevy coupe and relocated the gas tank to the trunk. I built a steel "firewall to separate the trunk from the drivers compartment. It was about 16 galons and was a flat rectangle shape that stood on edge so it tucked right behind the rear firewall. I closed up the old filler hole where the ugly stock filler was (p***enger side) and put a new round filler door from somthing modern (chevy astro van I think) that had a inside release and moved it to the drivers side.

Doing this allowed me to keep the spare tire under the platform that was in the stock location in the trunk. I still had a ton of room in that trunk.

When I rebuilt my 38 coupe about 10 years ago I built a new trunk floor and raised it about 6 inches. I built a 20 gal tank and mounted it between the frame rails. It fills through a sealed filler inside the trunk. I installed a vent with a check valve in the top of the tank. Be glad to send a pic or two if you want them.
