Hello, I am Canadian but will be moving to Sacramento next year to go to Wyotech. Can I convert my liscence? Also can I liscence cars there and drive 'em around?
***uming you mean license PLATE? (not driver's license). I don't think so but check with the state's DMV that you're moving to. Daughter did the opposite a few years ago, moved to Vancouver from Michigan. No, and no. She had to get a Canadian driver's license, do the import thingy with her car and get a Canadian ***le & plates for it.
Mitchell, You may not have to get licensed or tag your vehicle for the states depending on your status. I would check the California DMV rules concerning students if you are only going to be there for school. Resident status changes from state to state unfortunately and in some states students aren't considered residents at an out of state school. If however, you are planning on staying in California permanently you would have to take resident status. Also look at international drivers license requirements to see if that might cover your situation.
Been there, done that. If you move down for over a year and have to get a US license just make sure you have current registration for your car. They treat it as the '***le', something you don't have to worry about in Canada. Be prepared for all sorts of resistance from the DMV idiots.
If you are just going to school here and plan to go back. Use an address from Canada and just keep it all registered and insured there. It can be a real headache to transfer it.
