So I just replaced my fuel system on my 1950 chevy and know that I have finished that sure enough here comes another problem. My points are all cracked, I dont know what from because the rotor isnt even scuffed up at all. I just replaced them about a week ago too. Any way I want to switch it over to electronic ign anyways, so whats the deal? who should I buy from? what do I need? How to I convert it to electronic ign? any links to a good kit would be appreciated!
    thanks dudes

Can't that happen from leaving the key on without it running?

Playing the radio with the key on.....sends current to the points with the stock ignition switch.

Six volt cars don't have ballast resistors. Piewagn is correct that leaving the key on with the motor not running can burn your points. The other thing that will kill them is a bad or missing condensor. You do not need electronic ignition in that car. The stock system will function perfectly and once you start getting into it you will see that it is not that mysterious.

Silly me. I was assuming he had changed it over to 12v.:D He didn't say weather he did or not. But yes, 6v systems don't use a resistor. I've seen coils that oozed their inards out from leaving the key on. That's why they made the acc. position.

Put a ballast resistor in the coil power feed - drops voltage to about 8 volts . Necessary on 12 volt systems - to avoid points burning .:D

Just make life easy and go with a Pertronix box inside your cap. Super easy to do, fairly cheap and essentially converts your points system to electronic. Here's a link...

People are telling me to go with electronic and others say stay with the points system. Which is better? Why? Cant i basically fix my problem with a ballast resistor that costs about $10?
    Thanks dudes

Points will ALWAYS get you home, but they do sometimes wear out, and sometimes need adjustment, Go whatever you want, but on a 50 year old car you should expect some maintanece anyway

Points are cheap, requires some maintanence. Electronic starts better, pretty much install and forget about. Your decision.

    Points are traditional. ;)

This is exactly why I won't run electronic! Been let down on the side of the road before and threw the standard stock dist back in & got home! Points WILL always get you home. A spare set is cheap, just throw 'em in the glove box.
