I had my 1952 Chrysler 331 rebuilt to stock specs. I also had the harmonic balancer rebuilt. I went to put it on today and couldn't get the nut off the end of the crankshaft. When I turned it,the crank turned with it. I dont have the tranny hooked up. I guess that's my next step. Hook it up so that the crank doesn't turn anymore and then give it a try. My next question would be the proper direction to turn the nut. If I'm looking at the engine from the front, do I simply use the standard way of removing a nut and turn it to the left? Or is it supposed to be to the right for some other reason that I'm not aware of. I just want to make sure I'm turning it the right way when I get the tranny hooked up and stop the crank from turning. Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Put something through the bellhousing flange holes to stop the flywheel from turning, or buy one of those fancy flywheel stop tools. Or use an impact.
It loosens normally, counter clockwise. Yesterday I used an impact gun to unlock the bolt on a 392 that has never been removed since 1958. It did the job and didn't spin the motor.
