For what its worth, here is the response from Dad, who probably formulated some of this stuff: "They didnt use lead based paints for cars. But there may be a chance that it contains other heavy metals which can be just as bad. In particular molybdenum and chrome. The primer however, could very well be lead based. So your recommendation is good use a respirator!"
Shit i was 9 or 10 when i started body working, and that shit still hasnt affected me, You think 50 years ago anyone cared?? Now everyone is parinoid about brain damage from lead but the country is raising generations of stupid never done anything in their lives, kids
It's kool man, I grew up in a house with asbestos siding, and grandpa that did lead work in the basement, and steel and lead plumbing. Ever sprayed n.o.s. lead lacquer through a binks number 7 siphon feed gun onto a '51 merc with only a lucky strike as a filter? That stuff smells like joy dish soap. Your kids can't possibly turn out any more brain damaged than me. Heh heh. But seriously, bill hines is still alive right? exactly.
Smoking is bad, drinking is bad, Just like every thing else out there, its all bad for you.. just somethings get you when you least expect it.. Your car like all the others out there have lead in the paint, some Body seams too....
Dont know what all the ball breaking is about.. I love working on cars, and bikes, and Ive done my share of sanding, but what I ingest in my system is one thing, when it comes to my 3 year old daughter its another.Theres enough things out there to make a kid sick these days, why add to it with something that you can prevent. Myself,if I wasnt doing the media blasting or some stripper, I would tarp an area outside, I have one of those garage in a tent set ups since I dont own a garage..wear a respirator, and eyeprotection. I also use a fan which I blow in fresh air in one side of the tent.I clean up after Im done, sweeping up the tarp on the ground as well as the sides of the tent and ceiling.and I make sure where I am doing the sanding is not where my kid plays, or close to a drain. When I'm done sanding first thing I do it wash hands and face outside, take off my boots and pretty much strip as soon as I get inside, making sure My clothes arnt anywhere my kid can come in contact with, then I hop in shower and get cleaned up. I do this before she comes running up to hug daddy or any other contact. I personally dont think its over kill..just good sense, even if there isnt lead in the paint, I rather be safe then sorry before I do something that might affect my family. Yeah I know kids chewed on windowsills, we had harmful siding, and people lived under powerlines.. but I cough enough from smoking, seen people in their 50s on oxygen, and organs failing because of some chemical at a past job.. if I can do just one thing to cut down her chance of getting sick, I think Im doing ok as a Dad.Its easier to harp on someone for being concerned about something so many of us took for granted when we were young..harder to hear from a Doc that something you did ended up making your kid sick. just my two cents Tony
