Im getting close to finishing a built flathead for my roadster and thought to my self I should probably do something proactive about filtering the air. I looked around and found a plastic filterish type insert that supposed to fit in the mouth of the scoop type carb stack. I ordered a couple up from Macs and when they arrived I wasnt really happy with them so I decided to make my own. I went on McMaster cars web site and ordered some O-rings, snap rings and br*** screen. Due to the cost of the br*** at McMaster carr I got a chunk from the local recycler for around $2.50 a pound, I ended up having to buy a 10lb chunk but that beet the $150 from Mcmaster. I planned the part out and did a quick model and drawing in SolidWorks to use as a guide and hit the lathe. When I had the parts machined I found that the snap rings I had were way to heavy duty and that I couldnt even compress them with my snapping pliers so I made my own out of br***. The result is a couple of nice looking filters with a cleanable filter element.
Recommendations? I was thinking about using a screen with a wider grid. I happened to have this screen already.
Wider grid = does not remove anything but birds. The filter has to be much, much larger than the air-horn area to both filter and flow - and sometimes not even then. If you can afford a very tall housing: make a tall narrow cone out of screen, base = air-horn, closed at the top. Air goes through the sides.
I would think about a cover for the tops so if you get caught in the rain or when you park it. They will act like funnels. Mt 2 cents
Looks great! To the naysayers, pffffft! How many folks run stacks like this on the HAMB!? Tons! Yours are well made. I would look for a K&N type filter material to add to em for some finer filtration.
