How far can you go to re-surface a spindle (37-41 ford front) if you had a machine shop turn it down. are there under sized bearings available?

You would have to go to a different series bearing most likely as ball and roller bearings are not normally furnished with under/over sizes. And unless the machine work was free it would be cheaper to just buy another spindle. And if a wheel bearing burned and siezed on the spindle I would be concerned about structural integerty.

  3. That is not a standard practice unless you can do it yourself, then you would weld them up and Grind back to standard size. New replacements are Way cheeper than machine shop labor.

Thanks, I guess what I need to know is how far can you clean them up they are not bad just one is lightly pitted. no burned or bearing scoring. thanks!

  5. I'd half to say just clean them with some Emery Cloth till clean. Don't worry about getting all the pits out. If you have a big grove in them from the inner race spinning they are Junk. It's not a press fit. The bearing should slide on just snug by hand. I don't know what the actual clearance should be. Maybe .001-.002

I once worked at a machine shop where a customer had brought in a beater spindle that was worn beyond comprehension. When we told him that it could not be repaired, I mistakenly joked with him that he should build up the area with jb weld and laughed. I found him a couple of minutes later in the parts department buying...jb weld! I had to do some quick apologizing to talk him out of my bad suggestion. Do yourself a favor and get a different spindle so that you never have to worry about it again!
